5 of the Best Country Clubs in Winnipeg

The earliest country clubs began in the year 1880 in the United States. Back then, only the elite upper class could experience the luxury of various amenities that promote leisure, privacy, and wellness.

Today, country clubs can now be private or public. Some country clubs may also open selected facilities to anyone who can pay its fees.

So, if you’re looking for the best country clubs in Winnipeg, look no further and dive into this article to learn more!

What is the average price of country club memberships in Winnipeg?

Country club memberships can cost as low as $800 to as high as $800,000. Additional payments, such as initial fees, may cost around $900 up to $34,000 while monthly rates can cost around $90 up to $2,100.

Some golf and country clubs may also impose guest fees ranging from $70 to $206 to keep the place as clean and as private as possible.

More exclusive country clubs may also charge initiation fees for potential members. “Applicants” will pay around $68,000 a month – with no interest – in order to become full-fledged country club members.

The Glendale Golf and Country Club is hailed as the wedding-perfect venue for anyone dreaming of tying the knot outdoors.

From what we’re told, spouses who were married at this country club highlighted the venue’s well-pruned green spaces, outdoor set-ups, and lakeside views.

The venue is also accessible for people with disabilities, which we think is a plus as it means the country club is safe and convenient for all kinds of people.

In terms of food, we’ve heard that the country club’s catering services are also superb and mouth-watering.

Buffet menus are available upon request and can be tailored depending on clients’ preferences.

Do note, however, that any leftover, unserved, or unopened drinks and food cannot be taken out of the venue.

Sure, it may sound wasteful, but the country club does so to protect guests and club members from potential diseases.

Given that club members will pay an average of $800 for their fees, we think that the country club should always serve fresh and delicious meals so members will get value for their money and avoid food wastage.

Besides weddings and catering, the country club offers other facilities such as a golf course, sports courts, clubhouse, swimming pool, and bowling greens.

As for member ship types, Glendale currently offers three membership types, namely Intermediate, Couple, and 40+ Primary.

All membership types offer locker rooms, unlimited use of the golf course and courts, and unrestricted tee time.

A downside we found though, is that most of the country club membership benefits are focused on golf.

We think this might not be appealing for members who are not into golf or club applicants who also want perks for non-golf amenities.

Pros

  • Feedback on venue being wedding-perfect
  • Offers three kinds of memberships
  • Venue is accessible for people with disabilities

Cons

  • Feedback on inconsistent food quality
  • Membership perks are mostly focused on golf

Southwood Golf and Country Club is known for its vast golf course spanning 5,314 to 7,311 yards in length.

The country club has over 18 courses, which we think is enough to accommodate golfers who want to maximise their game and scoring.

While the golf course is the main attraction of the country club, we’re pleased to find that it also offers dining facilities and outdoor spaces.

Country club members can grab their favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner fares at either the clubhouse restaurant or banquet halls.

Club members will also get to choose from the club’s on- and off-season menu comprising prime rib cuts, seafood, and lobster specials.

These dining facilities are also open for all sorts of special occasions. For more private settings – such as corporate events and business meetings – Southwood also offers boardrooms and smaller event halls

We also checked the country club’s outdoor spaces and found that its shaped and prunes golf course is perfect for weddings.

Clients highlight the Trappist Monastery Ruins, one of the historic hotspots in Winnipeg housed within the country club’s complex.

Golfers mentioned that the ruins add a unique flair that complements the vast green spaces of the whole course.

It’s just a tad unfortunate that Southwood doesn’t have that much outdoor amenities compared to the previous entry.

We’re also iffy to hear from golfers that the country club’s golf course isn’t always as perfect as it seems.

Some parts of the course have grass too long for golfing. The course is also reportedly quite windy due to the lack of trees in some areas – golfers don’t like this as they’ll have to deal with golf balls going off course from their strokes.

Given that Southwood has areas still under development, its management should consider reshaping the course, adding wind defence, and other non-golf outdoor amenities to cater to other members’ interests.

Pros

  • Offers 18 golf courses
  • Offers clubhouse dining, banquet halls, and boardrooms
  • Houses the historic Trappist Monastery Ruins

Cons

  • Feedback on golf course having a faulty design
  • Fewer outdoor amenities

Customer Reviews

Layout is very open and fair

“It is difficult to build a course with character on the flat plains of Winnipeg. This links style course is in very good condition except for half of the bunkers! Very inconsistent amounts of sand. Other than that the layout is very open and fair. The greens roll well with decent undulations. If you like tree-lined courses, this course isn’t for you. There is only one hole with trees in play. Southwood is very scorable however it’s only defense is the potential of extreme winds.” – GG

Venue was nice enough on its own and did not require any additional decorations

“My wife and I were married at Southwood in January 2016.  The venue is beautiful and the large windows overlooking the course made for a perfect backdrop. We spent little money on decorations because the venue was nice enough on its own and did not require any additional decorations. The bar was a big selling point for us when we went to see the venue.  We received many compliments on the food (we went with the buffet) and the chef was helpful when we met with him to decide on a menu.  Jeff, the manager, was very helpful and accommodating as well.  He responded to every email and provided a lot guidance which made planning easier for us.  Overall, we could not have been happier with our decision to have the wedding at Southwood.  We would strongly recommend this venue to others and hope to be back again as guests for a wedding.” – MD

Rossmere Golf and Country Club offers 18 different golf courses, each lined with trees. These provide shade and defense from winds, which golfers said helped them make more accurate strikes and shots.

Our favourite aspect of this country club is that it offers golfing areas for beginners and intermediate players.

Golf simulators are available for those who are not confident in their golf skills right now. These facilities also come with a snack shack and are open to members and non-members.

The country club also offers indoor golfing facilities for those who want to practise and enjoy their membership perks even during chilly Winnipeg winters.

Another thing we loved about Rossmere is that it offers a breakfast menu comprising different types of breakfast meals catering to various eaters.

The menu consists of heart meals perfect for enjoying the morning with family or friends before they start ticking off every tee and hole on their list.

Besides that, there also are drink kiosks and express menus available for club members who want quick meals they can take with them while they explore the golf course.

Do note, however, that most of the beverages contain small amounts of caffeine or alcohol.

These drink options might not be palatable for some members, so we think that the country club management should consider adding more drinks options to their menus.

We’re also disappointed to hear that the food quality of Rossmere’s is inconsistent, with most of the meals being dry, stale, or flavourless.

Pros

  • Golf course has more trees
  • Indoor golfing available in the winter
  • Offers golf simulators
  • Offers a breakfast menu and quite an array of drinks

Cons

  • Feedback on inconsistent food quality
  • Limited array of non-caffeine and non-alcoholic beverages

The Niakwa Country Club offers spacious golf courses, event halls, outdoor amenities, and nature sanctuaries.

One of Niakwa Country Club’s favourable points is that it offers its event facilities to the public.

Non-members may avail of the banquet halls and meeting rooms to hold weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, corporate businesses, and even funeral services.

Guest golfing greens are also available, with rental prices costing $20 up to $140 per client.

It’s just unfortunate that event packages with golf course perks are limited to country club members. Parts of the golf course are also off limits for photography, even for members.

If you’re after hosting an event with golf games, then a public golf course and recreation centre might be the better option for you.

Golf and event spaces aren’t the only highlights of Niakwa as it also has fitness and coaching services available.

Another highlight of this country club is that it is a certified nature sanctuary in Winnipeg. We checked some of the place’s nature sightings gallery and found that club members share the place with wildlife such as deer, birds, butterflies, and various flower species.

Niakwa highlighted that its eco-friendly spaces are parts of its efforts to preserve nature and Winnipeg’s wildlife.

On the downside, we’re not too happy to hear that the indoor facilities aren’t heated well, especially during winter.

Management should check on the club’s heaters and fix any broken ones to prevent members and guests from experiencing discomfort from the unbearable cold.

Pros

  • Event facilities are open to the public
  • Accommodates funeral services
  • Offers fitness facilities and coaching
  • Certified nature sanctuary

Cons

  • Reports on indoor facilities not being heated in the winter
  • Event with golf course packages are limited to club members

Customer Reviews

Country club facilities are clean and maintained

“Beautiful venue, and well decorated for the holidays. Staff is helpful and accomodating. We were there for a business meeting in the large ballroom, and we were a few photocopies shotterbox, and they quickly ran down to the copier and made copies for us. Large ballroom ran cold temperature-wise, but staff was attentive and got the room warmed up eventually. Washrooms are clean and roomy. Would definitely love to go in summer.” – HSB

A great place for golf and different events

“I’m a member here and I think this is one of the top golf courses in the city. Ever year they do an immaculate job keeping the course in prime condition. The kitchen is excellent as well. I have been here for a number of business events as well we have hosted our staff Christmas party here. All around great place.” – Jonathan Klippenstein-Epp

The Breezy Bend and Country Club is another picturesque place for special events and enjoying green spaces.

In terms of its golf course, we love how the country club offers 18 different kinds of golf courses, each lined with trees and some with artificial ponds.

One of the highlights of the Bend is that it offers golf packages for kids (juvenile) and young adults (junior).

These come with unlimited tee time, unlimited practice area use, club storage, lockers, push carts, and Golf Canada cards.

Club members can also invite guests to play golf and use other country club facilities, such as banquet halls and event venues.

Members may also receive the tees online, which we think is convenient especially if they want to enjoy a quiet and private golfing time.

Besides golf, we’re also pleased to learn that the Bend offers wedding packages for members and non-members.

It’s just a tad unfortunate that – as of writing – wedding dates at the venue can only be booked on Fridays and Saturdays.

This is quite limiting as guests will need to reserve their slots fast, especially if they want to enjoy the premium nuptial packages of the country club.

Another thing we’re bummed to hear about is that non-members are discriminated against by some of the staff and full club members.

We heard that non-members fully understand that they have limitations in terms of their perks, but we hope that staff will also accommodate and treat them with the best customer service as much as possible.

Pros

  • Offers 18 different golf courses
  • Has juvenile and junior golf programmes
  • Members can reserve tees online

Cons

  • Weddings can only be booked on Fridays and Saturdays
  • Feedback on discrimination against non-members
