The Top Movie Theater in Winnipeg
Before we give you our picks for the best movie theatre in Winnipeg, let’s discuss first the factors that we’ve used in choosing our entries:
1. Landmark Cinemas

Criteria | Ratings |
Concession | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Facility | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Customers’ feedback | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Landmark Cinemas is one of the largest motion picture theater companies across Canada. They’ve been a go-to for film enthusiasts since 1965.
They have four movie theatres throughout Manitoba, and two of them are located in Winnipeg. With that said, this makes them a convenient and accessible option for moviegoers.
Since they have many branches around the city, people have more options to choose from if their preferred Landmark Cinema branch has been filled out.
We like this movie theater company because they show movies in multiple formats like Premium Large Format (PLF) brands and RealD 3D technology. They have PLF formats like IMAX, Laser Ultra, and Xtreme, among others.
This takes any movie experience taken to another level. In addition to that, their theatres are installed with full-recliner seating for the comfort of patrons.
They also have free reserved seating for their customers. This lets movie-goers pick their seats ahead of time, eliminating the worry of running out of good seats.
We also like that their concession offers a wide array of snacks from popcorn to ice cream and pizza. It’s also good that they have nutritional info available on their website so that consumers with strict diets can take note of it.
However, Landmark Cinemas is limited to showing new movie releases only. This entry might not be great for you if you’re looking forward to watching old and independent films on big screens.
Nonetheless, Landmark Cinemas is still worthy of mentioning on this list because of their easy process of buying tickets and pre-ordering concessions. Patrons can book online and skip the long ticket lines with the Atom ticketing app and website.
Pros
- Free reserved seatings
- Full-recliner seats
- Free refills for large popcorns
- Online booking and snacks pre-order through Atom
Cons
- Screens new movie release only
- Concessions are bit expensive

2. Cinematheque in Winnipeg Film Group

Criteria | Ratings |
Concession | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) |
Facility | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Customers’ feedback | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Winnipeg Film Group is home to independent, cultural, and contemporary films. Artists lead this movie theatre in promoting the art of cinema in Winnipeg.
Being located in the historic Exchange District in the Artspace Building adds to the old-school charm of this place. Inside Winnipeg Film Group is Cinematheque, an intimate movie theatre committed to showing Canadian and international cinema.
So if independent and alternative films are right up your alley, this entry is your best bet for a movie theatre. Cinematheque also provides artist talks, panel discussions, and special events for film enthusiasts.
We like that Cinematheque’s movie offerings are also available as online streaming rentals. This entry is a good option if you’re the type of movie-lover who’d rather watch films that the comfort of your home.
It’s also impressive that their movie tickets are competitively priced. Students and seniors can enjoy a wide array of Canadian and International features for only $8, while the general tickets cost $10.
For members of Winnipeg Film Group, the tickets are only priced at $6. They also have promotions during weekdays where movie-goers can enjoy films at more affordable prices.
Another thing that we like about Cinematheque is that their tickets are easily available online. This is beneficial for customers who don’t like queuing up for movie tickets.
However, we think it’s a snag that this movie theater only screens independent films. So this won’t be a good place to go if you’re planning to watch mainstream movies.
Even so, Cinematheque is a good place if you want to immerse yourself in cultural and festival films and documentaries.
Pros
- Affordable ticket prices
- Offers home rentals
- Home for Architecture+Design Film Festival movie screenings
Cons
- Limited to independent films
- No mentioned info about concessions
- Mixed reviews online
3. Scotiabank Theatre Winnipeg

Criteria | Ratings |
Concession | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Facility | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Customers’ feedback | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Scotiabank Theatre, formerly known as SilverCity Polo Park, is one of the largest theatres in the province of Manitoba. It is conveniently located in the city’s downtown district.
The first thing that we like about Scotiabank Theatre is that it’s attached to Polo Park Shopping Mall. This makes it an excellent option for family and friends’ dates since there’s a lot to do around the area.
Aside from that, we also like that this movie theater boasts a 433-seat IMAX auditorium. Scotiabank Theatre is also the first movie theatre to screen first-release movies in IMAX 3D.
This is a great thing for movie-goers who cannot wait to see newly released movies in all their glory. It’s also good to mention that apart from mainstream movies, they screen independent films as well.
The drawback for this entry is that there are reports from former customers that the theatre needs more cleaners as the place looks soiled in between movie screenings. It also takes time for the concessions employees to serve snacks to the movie-goers in line.
Another flaw in this entry is that their seats are somewhat smaller. Patrons who are on the bigger side might be uncomfortable during the movie.
But despite that, Scotiabank Theatre makes up for it with their friendly staff. With that said, this makes this movie theatre a more welcoming and relaxing place for watching movies.
Pros
- Accessible location
- First to release Hollywood Films
- Screens both studio movies and independent films
Cons
- Need more concession employee and cleaners
- Relatively smaller seats

The atmosphere is just so relaxing
“Great Movie Experience One of the Best Theatres in Winnipeg. And probably the biggest as well. The atmosphere is just so relaxing. They have IMAX, DBox, 3D and all the settings you can get for a movie. Just went to watch Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings yesterday and man the Experience was out of the world well the movie was awesome so. You can get the best cineplex experience and pretty much anything for free with your scene points. So get your goggles on and watch shang chi in this theater.”—Dhruvraj Raulji, Google Reviews
Scotia bank is a great theater to visit
“I love the movies like every other person. Scotia bank is a great theater to visit. Was clean. I went to the IMAX experience for the lion king and the screen size was impressive. Loud sound, not for those who can’t handle it such as some of the elderly or those with hearing issues. But I loved it and it didn’t seem like anyone was complaining. Friendly staff, allowed me to cut the line to grab a tray that my wife forgot which allowed me to get into the movie on time. They did forget the butter on my wife’s popcorn which she is crazy about but they quickly added more without hesitation.”—Fabian Sanderson, Google Reviews
4. Cinema City Northgate

Criteria | Ratings |
Concession | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Facility | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Customers’ feedback | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) |
Cinema City Northgate was first established in 1999. However, it has been operated by Cineplex since 2007.
Located in McPhillips St, this movie theatre is a somewhat accessible option for movie-goers. Cinema City Northgate screens a mix of mainstream Hollywood and international movies.
Another great thing about them is that they’re the only place that screens Bollywood films.
It’s also good to note that they have fair pricing for their movie tickets. However, their concession stands are a bit on the expensive side.
What we like the most about Cinema City Northgate is their great parking space. The parking is spacious, which we think is an advantage for movie-goers who always have difficulty finding a good parking spot.
But even if they have ample space for parking, the movie theatre itself isn’t that much of a big one. Cinema City Northgate auditoriums have a range of 170-200 seats only.
And since their cinemas only cater to a small number of seats, their movie screen is also relatively small. We think that it’s a downside since patrons won’t be able to fully enjoy films on a small screen.
But despite that, we like that Cinema City Northgate is a good place for family dates. Since this place is located in Northgate Shopping Centre, there are a lot of other activities that can be done before going in for a movie.
It’s also nearby restaurants where groups of families and friends can take advantage of it.
Pros
- Relatively lower ticket prices
- Spacious parking area
- Screens Bollywood films
Cons
- Small theatre
- Old facility
- Mixed reviews

5. SilverCity St. Vital Cinemas

Criteria | Ratings |
Concession | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Facility | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Customers’ feedback | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
SilverCity was opened in November of 1985, and it’s located in the St. Vital shopping centre.
This movie theater boasts ten auditoriums with around 300 seats for each cinema. It also has an arcade, which is great for additional activities for kids and adults.
What we like the most about SilverCity are their clean cinema facilities. We think that this is one of the reasons why patrons keep on coming back to this place.
In addition to that, it comes with a spacious parking lot, which is an advantage for every movie-goer.
We also love that their staff is friendly and approachable. If you need a quick clean-up of your seats before the movie starts, one of their staff can be approached easily, and they’re quick to attend to your needs.
It’s also good to mention that buying tickets and snacks on-site is easier because of the automated kiosks. However, this can also be a downside since some people are technologically challenged and might find it hard to buy their tickets.
There are also reports from past customers that some of the kiosks are unreliable.
Nonetheless, we think that SilverCity is a good option for a movie theatre because of the number of screens that they have. They have more than ten screens, including UltraAVX and DBOX screens.
And with that, this means that SilverCity can deliver lots of showtimes.
Pros
- Attentive and friendly staff
- Lots of parking space
- Use of kiosk for ticket and snacks
Cons
- Kiosk aren’t always reliable
- Seats need upgrading

Always a solid experience
“Always a solid experience. Although it would be great if the had more people working the registers during the busy times, all hands on. Otherwise the experience I have coming there nearly every week is always nice and consistent.”–August Karklin
