10 Winnipeg Pizza Places Filled with Pizzazz
Pizza is one of those dishes we can enjoy both in high-end restaurants and in our homes while in our pajamas.
Winnipeg’s dozens of pizzerias all have their own recipes, but there’s just so much flexibility when it comes to pizza that there are just as many bad restaurants as the good ones. These 10 Winnipeg pizza places are the ones that do pizza right.
1. Red Ember Common
We think Red Ember is the gold standard for pizza (in Winnipeg), preparing dishes with enough care to satisfy even hardcore Italians. The toppings for each pizza are all perfectly balanced, and we’ve never had anything that tasted out of the ordinary!
If it’s your first time coming here, you can’t go wrong with classics like the Margherita pizza. Along with many of Red Ember’s customers, it’s one of our favorites and is the one thing we always recommend when friends ask us about the place.
What makes Red Ember the best though, is how it isn’t afraid to experiment. The see-through kitchen lets you watch abominations like pizza with baby corn being made.
What’s even more surprising is how even the weirdest pizzas here become bestsellers at some point, proving just how skilled the restaurant’s chefs are.
2. Winnipeg City Pizza & Grill
Winnipeg City Pizza and Grill is a household name best known for its Indian pizzas. Stuff like the Tandoori chicken pizza are bestsellers, and it’s easy to see why.
Fusing Italian and Indian cuisine is something we never really got around to liking until we visited this place for the first time. The spices that Indian food is known for, mixed with the herbs and cheeses of Italian pizzas, had our tastebuds flying.
Since our first visit, the two things we’ve always ended up ordering are the Tandoori and butter chicken pizzas. You’ll find plenty of variants of these two flavors throughout the city, but none hold a candle to this restaurant’s recipes.
If you’re not into experimenting though, the die-hard meat lovers pizza is pretty amazing too.
3. A Little Pizza Heaven
A Little Pizza Heaven’s best selling point is its crust, which we always end up eating first before the pizza itself. You can opt for normal, garlic, and cheese-stuffed crusts, but we personally love the garlic one the most.
The vegan pizzas are absolutely amazing too! Even the non-vegans in our group thought it tasted better than the meat lovers pizza.
That’s not to say that the meat lovers is bad though. It tastes just as good, but the vegan pizza’s garlic crust blends much better with other veggies than with meat.
4. Tommy’s Pizzeria
If you like thin-crust pizza, then we strongly recommend trying out Tommy’s pizzas. This crust compliments the freshly prepared ingredients really well, especially on items like the Detroit style and prosciutto pizzas.
Despite being so thin, the crust still manages to have a consistent crispy outside and fluffy inside that we all love. As you bite, the sauces kind of seep into the crust, making the whole slice even more flavorful.
While the pies here are more expensive than in other restaurants, the pie sizes and overall quality help you feel like you really got what you paid for. Even our party of four had a hard time finishing our Detroit pizza!
5. Shorty’s Pizza
Shorty’s has a very laid-back atmosphere, but the pizzas taste like pure hard work. Everything from the crust to the toppings tastes just right, and we never left this place feeling like anything was missing.
We usually don’t like New York-style pizzas because they’re always either too greasy, the crust is too doughy, or the overall flavor is just too boring.
Shorty’s really made our relationship with this pizza an enemies-to-lovers kind of thing, and it’s the one thing we always come back for on our visits.
When it comes to takeout, the bacon mushroom is our go-to. The slices are so loaded that it takes just two to fill most of us up!
6. Santa Lucia Pizza
Santa Lucia’s pizza is the very definition of comfort food. Every item here is as greasy as it gets, but it’s packed with so much flavor that you just can’t help but eat mouthfuls.
The pizza here tastes great, but what really sets this pizzeria apart is how much it gives back. There’s always some sort of fundraising or charity partnership going on, and it’s comforting to know that we’re feeding someone else while we eat.
Specialty pizzas are usually offered during these partnerships, where all the money raised from that menu item is given to charity.
7. Santa Ana Pizzeria & Bistro
Santa Ana Pizzeria is defined by high-quality, wood-fired pizzas. The smokiness elevates every single one of the pizzas to a new level, even the basic ones like pepperoni.
The pizzas are made by Italian-trained chefs who value tradition and authenticity. Everything tastes like it’s made from scratch, helping it pair well with some of the Italian wine on the menu.
This restaurant’s more expensive than most, but you’re paying for top-notch quality.
8. Garwood Grill
Garwood specializes in Greek food and pizzas. In describing the pizza, the only thing we can say is it’s as comforting as comfort food gets.
Everything’s cheesy and greasy, which is exactly what we’re looking for on our lazy days. We didn’t notice any dips in quality even during the busiest hours, and our deliveries always came hot and on time.
Our favorite is the pepperoni and mushroom pizza, although we also see a ton of people ordering the island pineapple and ham one.
If you decide to go for the pepperoni and mushroom, try adding some chili oil to make the whole thing taste better
9. Vera Pizzeria
Vera Pizzeria does Neapolitan-style pizzas best and at affordable prices! It uses fresh ingredients, homemade sauces and cheeses, and a wood-fired oven to make some of the best pizzas in the city.
Among all the pizzas sold here, the Napoletana and panna pancetta pizzas are must-tries. They go really well with some lasagna and gelato, and we’ve struggled to find other Italian restaurants to rival the experience you get here.
10. Corrientes Argentine Pizzeria
Corrientes is a family-owned pizzeria that offers a very interesting blend of South American and Italian cuisine. Where else can you get a Margherita pizza with a side of empanadas?
Most of the pizzas here have thin crusts that are crispy but flavorful enough to eat on their own. The Corrientes pizza is the best way to enjoy this kind of crust, with the blue cheese and oregano complimenting the crust’s garlicky flavor.
