We assessed the environmental consultants based on the following criteria:
1. Prairie Environmental
CRITERIA | RATING |
RANGE OF SERVICES | ★★★☆☆ 3.5/5 |
CONSULTANTS | ★★★★★ 5/5 |
> Competent and well-versed | ★★★★★ 5/5 |
> Prompt and adherent to SOPs | ★★★★★ 5/5 |

Prairie Environmental is a firm that offers environmental consulting services along with inspections and assessments of various structures.
Its speciality is asbestos inventory and removal. The firm is deemed as one of the best in this field across Winnipeg.
From what we’ve learned, the firm carefully examines structures – especially those built before 1990 – for traces of asbestos.
Then, they’ll assess the best solutions to remove the asbestos safely as disturbing the material can cause long-term damage to people’s health and the environment.
Besides dealing with asbestos, we’re pleased that Prairie Environmental does consulting and removal services for moulds.
We appreciate this firm for inspecting every nook and cranny of the building for hidden spores and mould growth and assessing how to deal with them safely.
Another favourable point of this environmental consulting firm is that it is accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has a rating of A+.
From what we’re told, this rating is consistent with the firm’s consultants’ skills and work ethic. We have to give it to Jeff and his team for providing accurate information about the hazardous materials in buildings.
We’re also giving plus points to them for their responsiveness to their clients’ queries and needs.
We also liked how they were prompt in providing follow-throughs about the ongoing removal process of hazardous materials.
That said, it’s just unfortunate that Prairie Environmental’s services are currently limited to buildings and hazardous structural materials.
As of writing, the firm currently doesn’t deal with other environmental issues other than those in buildings.
Another downside to this firm is that it currently doesn’t offer Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) services.
We find this quite limiting, as clients will need to enlist another company for such service after their Phase I ESA.
Pros
- Accredited by the BBB, with a rating of A+
- Specialises in asbestos inventory and removal
- Feedback on Jeff and his team being excellent in their field
Cons
- Services focus on buildings and structural materials
- Currently doesn’t offer Phase II ESA services
Customer Reviews
Jeff is very knowledgeable and helpful
“I have worked with Jeff and his team at Prairie twice now and will continue use them for their professionalism, quick response, accurate information and help with understanding asbestos containing materials and the process on the testing procedures including for the abatement type work. Jeff is very knowledgeable on his work and very helpful in this unknown field to most people.” – Blue Bella
Great work for great value
“We hired Prairie Environmental to do asbestos testing and to provide a report for a demo project we had taken on. Not only were they great to deal with, they provided quick service. Great value as well! 100% will hire again.” – Kevin Mallin
2. J&D Environmental Ltd.

RANGE OF SERVICES | ★★★★★ 5/5 |
QUALITY OF CONSULTANTS | ★★★★★ 5/5 |
> Competent and well-versed | ★★★★★ 5/5 |
> Prompt and adherent to SOPs | ★★★★★ 5/5 |

J&D Environmental is another firm that offers comprehensive consulting, assessment, and removal services.
One advantage we noticed is that this company extends its services to homeowners.
In terms of hazardous materials, the company specialises in inspecting properties for asbestos and mould and eliminating them with the safest ways possible.
Clients highlighted that they received accurate reports of their home’s asbestos levels in less than 24 hours. The fast results means they can stay somewhere safer until the asbestos has been dealt with.
The speed of results also gives the company ample time to deal with the harmful material as soon as possible.
They also noted that the firm provided fair pricing that suits the prompt and professional services.
Note, however, that the firm’s rates can only be requested via phone call as its website doesn’t have a “request quote” tab. Its online form is also currently limited to just enquiring about services.
Another thing we liked about J&D Environmental is that it also tests and analyses air, soil and water quality.
These services are quite useful, especially for clients who just purchased properties that may have been contaminated by the previous owners or by the estates’ surroundings.
In case the consultants find environmental anomalies with the clients’ properties, an advantage of this firm is that it offers Phase II and Phase III ESA services.
An inconvenience to Phase III ESA services though, is that the firm needs to get approval from the Manitoba Government before it pushes through with the service.
Clients will also need to bear being surrounded by harmful materials until they get their homes consulted and cleared.
Alternatively, clients can stay somewhere else to reduce the risk of inhaling any noxious particles, then move back into their homes after the consultants eliminate the contaminants.
Pros
- Can provide asbestos test results in less than 24 hours
- Extends services to homeowners
- Does Phase II and III ESA services
- Feedback on fair pricing and prompt services
Cons
- Phase III ESA will require government approval
- Prices/quotes for services can only be requested via phone call

Team was responsive and well-versed
“I had been in search of a company who offered testing on samples such as asbestos. After contacting a few companies, and still waiting for responses; I was referred to J&D Environmental and contacted Danial. The response times were quick; the very next day. Instructions were easy to follow, and even contacting through phone, Danial was very easy to talk to. Results were received in the timeframe specified. I highly recommend this company. Everything regarding my interaction with them was pleasant and professional.” – Aileen Sagad
Kudos to Danial for professionalism and genuine environmental concern
“Our neighbourhood was recently notified about a potential concern with lead in the residential water system. This was of obvious concern to us and we are so very pleased that we dealt with J&D Environmental to have our water tested. We dealt with Danial, who walked us through the process and pricing and reassured us that they understood our concern and would deal with it thoroughly. We were very reassured by the genuine concern and the professionalism displayed. We would certainly engage J&D Environmental again if the need arises and can wholeheartedly recommend them.” – Sharon Balasko

Cypher Environmental takes pride in having environmental consultants and experts that exert effort in saving water and reducing carbon footprint as much as possible in all of its projects.
Due to this, its services are best suited for building roads, mining, and agricultural projects. The company has also developed its own line of products that stabilise roads without compromising the planet.
One of the products is a non-corrosive and eco-friendlier alternative to road salts and is used to eliminate unwanted dust from different soil types and unpaved roads.
Another product provides long-term stabilization for roads and reduces the need for continual maintenance due to moist weather.
It also increases density and reduces the permeability of roads, making them sturdier for quite a long time.
We looked into the company’s profile and found that it has used these products and its expertise for projects by notable firms, such as Teck, Baffinland, and China Shenhua.
That said, it’s just unfortunate that Crypher’s environmental consulting services are currently limited to large-scale projects.
Besides road-building, this company also provides free-to-download resources on its product line, environmental solutions, and how clients can practise sustainable living.
We’re just a little iffy that some of the useful online pamphlets require memberships before clients can download them.
We think can be limiting to some looking for resources about the company and its expertise.
Pros
- Specialises in sustainable road-building and mining solutions
- Has its own line of environmentally friendly building products
- Offers free-to-download resources on sustainability
Cons
- Services are currently limited to large-scale projects
- Some of the free-to-download resources require memberships

Love how the consultants provide genuined support for every project
“Cypher products, in addition to their ecological properties, help reduce water consumption in the maintenance of unpaved roads. On the other hand, Cypher’s team provides close and personalized support for each specific requirement of dust control and road stabilization. “– Juan Barrios

Asbestos and mould aren’t the only deadly elements that could be lurking in homes and buildings. For one, radon is one of the hazardous materials present in many Winnipeg homes.
Radonmatters is one of the trustworthy firms that specialise in radon inspection and mitigation services.
A favorurable point of this company is that they use top-of-the-range testing apparatus to assess the levels of radon in properties.
Consultants will then use their assessments to determine how they’ll eliminate the harmful matter safely and without spreading the element to other areas of the estate.
Another thing we love about Radonmatters is that it is a member of the Canadian – National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP) and Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST).
For us, the company’s certifications reflect its consultants’ expertise in examining spaces and eliminating traces of radon carefully.
Although it is worth noting that this company currently only focuses on dealing with radon and is yet to open its consultancy services for other environmental issues.
Other than radon testing and remission, Radonmatters also offers testing kits clients can use to detect traces of radon in their homes!
These kits cost $180, and are suitable for homeowners who want to check whether they’ll need immediate action to eliminate the harmful substance in their place.
The kits are also portable, which we like as it makes testing convenient.
A downside though is that while these testing kits are more affordable than hiring professionals, they aren’t currently certified by the C–NRPP, which means the results might not be accurate.
That said, we think it might be more cost-efficient to hire Radonmatter’s consultants to do the radon detection and removal for you.
Pros
- Specialises in sustainable road-building and mining solutions
- Has its own line of environmentally friendly building products
- Offers free-to-download resources on sustainability
Cons
- Services are currently limited to large-scale projects
- Some of the free-to-download resources require memberships
Customer Reviews
Trustworthy from initial contact to execution of services
“From the first phone conversation with Eric until the radon mitigation team finished their install RadonMatters was a great experience. They answered all of my questions and demonstrated expertise, professionalism, and respect for the property. Their quote was accurate and there were no surprises. They were on time and completed the job the same day. The fan is quiet and there was no significant disruption to the area where it was installed. The team was wonderful -always consulting with me and explaining their process. I could not be happier with the outcome. My readings now are consistently under 10 and I have peace of mind. Thank you for everything!” – Sharon Alward
Excellent services that are worth their prices
“We are extremely happy with the radon mitigation work that was done. The work was done professionally, efficiently and the price was much lower than we anticipated. Eric was a wealth of information when we were still deciding what to do with our high radon levels. It has been over a year now and our levels are always low. I highly recommend using Radonmatters.” – Micheline Girard
5. Stantec

RANGE OF SERVICES | ★★★★☆ 4/5 |
QUALITY OF CONSULTANTS | ★★★★★ 5/5 |
> Competent and well-versed | ★★★★★ 5/5 |
> Prompt and adherent to SOPs | ★★★★★ 5/5 |

Stantec is primarily an engineering firm that also incorporates sustainability and indigenous relations in its practices.
In fact, it currently employs top-of-the-line engineers from different fields and environmental consultants.
We love how these professionals have worked with other firms to construct some of the most notable structures in Winnipeg.
Some of these projects include Centrepoint Winnipeg, Canada Museum of Human Rights, and Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.
In terms of sustainability, we think it’s worth noting that Stantec practises the adaptive reuse of old and abandoned buildings. One of its notable projects was converting an old hospital into a lavish hotel and resort.
Besides reusing old structures, we also appreciate Stantec for considering the welfare of indigenous lands and people.
We think that this act respects sacred lands and preserves natural spaces that contribute to the air, water, and soil quality of Winnipeg. We also think that this advocacy lets wild flora and fauna thrive continuously.
However, it’s a little disappointing that Stantec’s environmental consulting services are currently limited to large-scale and commercial properties.
We also find it limiting that its services are closely tied to engineering, which means its services might be best suited for construction.
That said, hiring this company for environmental consulting might not be worth it if you’re only after inspection and removal of harmful elements in your property.
Pros
- Has worked with notable infrastructures in Winnipeg
- Specialises in adaptive building reuse
- Advocates for indigenous people’s rights and culture
Cons
- Services are limited to large-scale, commercial properties
- Services are closely tied with engineering
