Sunshade Ltd. is accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which tells of its reliability and skill in building sunrooms and patio covers.
The company takes pride in building patio covers that save energy, withstand sun, rain, and snow, and fit any home style.
While we like the simplicity of style in its current lineup, we do note that the variety of designs available is quite limited. If you’re looking for a statement patio cover, you may want to look elsewhere.
We’re also bummed that the company currently only uses metal for its shaded structures and doesn’t work with other building materials like wood or vinyl.
Another favourable point of Sunshade is that it provides warranties covering at least five years on workmanship.
The warranties will also help you replace damaged components in your patio cover without spending anything at all.
We’re just a tad disappointed to hear reports of some of Sunshade’s patio covers getting too hot during the summer, making it unbearable for clients to stay there. It wouldn’t hurt to make improvements on product quality, in our opinion.
On a brighter note, we’re happy that the company has apologised for the structural flaws and offered to fix them.
If you decide to enlist Sunshade to build your patio cover, we recommend booking its free-of-charge consultation services so you’ll know how your patio cover will look like and how much you’ll spend.
Pros
- BBB-accredited company
- Provides 5-year warranties on workmanship
- Offers free consultation services
Cons
- Limited patio cover designs
- A few reports on subpar product quality
Customer Reviews
Must-hire for any enclosure and covered space for your outdoors.
“We purchased our Glastar sunroom in spring of 2020 and it was completed just before summer. I can truly say the only regret is not having done this sooner. Winnipeg is known for mosquitoes, especially in the evenings. Prior to the sunroom, sitting outside was difficult. The sunroom changed everything. It provided nice shade during the day and gave us a great place to sit late into the evenings. We love the ability to sit “outside” even when it is warm and rainy. The quality and attention to detail was excellent and we have not had any leaks. One thing I would recommend to anyone considering a sunroom is don’t make it too small. The cost will be long forgotten, but a sunroom that is too small will always cause regret. Our sunroom is 20×12 and a perfect size. We can relax and have meals in it without feeling crowded. A big thanks to Glastar and the workers that built it.” – Roland Pokorny
Great people to work with
“We couldn’t be more pleased with our dealings with them. We stopped in to Glastar on Sutherland Ave. to get some ideas and do a little research. Before leaving there 45 – 50 minutes later we had made our decision to purchase a Glastar Sunroom by SunShade. A week later a representative came to our home, for further consultation. Within 45 minutes we had a firm price quote & we signed a contract and paid the 10% deposit.
It was such a happy experience interacting with all these people through each and every aspect of the process. Later we enjoyed watching the 2 man crew assemble our Sunroom with care and attention to the details. We are so happy with the finished structure. It is everything we had hoped for. We would highly recommend Glastar to our friends and others.” – Terence E. White

Deck City is a prime deck and patio builder that also does shaded structures. In terms of patio covers, we love how it does wood and aluminium shades and pergolas.
Samples of its previous works are present in its virtual portfolio, which can serve as inspirations or references for anyone interested in building covers for their patios.
But if you prefer seeing what the patio covers will look like in real life, we recommend booking an appointment to visit its physical showroom.
We like that you can also book appointments outside of their regular hours as the company welcomes special visits and consultations.
Your visit will also be the prerequisite to availing the company’s 3D rendering services, which they’ll help you envision what your outdoor space will look like with the patio cover installed.
Unfortunately, this service is quite hefty as it can cost around $800 just for the design.
We’re also bummed to hear that the project estimations will only be given after the design process is finished, which means there’s no skipping the 3D rendering phase if you want to push through with this company’s services.
Another drawback is that the company’s warranty periods are shorter, with most lasting only two years.
On a brighter note, we still think that Deck City is a reputable and reliable builder of patio covers as the company employs renowned engineers and architects for its projects.
Pros
- Offers 3D design rendering services
- Provides appointments outside regular hours
- Impressive showroom
- Works with engineers and architects
Cons
- Pricey design process fees
- Shorter warranty period

“We had an excellent experience with Deck City. Everyone we dealt with was knowledgeable and courteous. We would absolutely strongly recommend Deck City.” – Nikki
Punctual labourers with fantastic workmanship
“Deck City finished our project last week and it looks fantastic. The workmanship is excellent (thank you Spencer and Ben). I have no hesitation recommending Deck City.” – Stephen Henry

Crown Spas and Pools is mostly known for building hot tubs and various types of pools for residential and commercial spaces.
What we love about the company’s inventory of gazebos and hot tub covers is that they’re made of different types of materials and can be free-standing or attached to a part of your home.
You may also choose whether you want your patio cover roofs to be flat, triangular, gabled, or with awnings.
It’s just a tad unfortunate that the company doesn’t offer any consultation services at the moment.
Still, we recommend looking into its online portfolio and visiting its showroom for inspiration.
We also love that the company’s website has online catalogues of the furniture brands it carries. Customers can choose which fixtures will complement their future patio covers.
Since having a patio cover built can be quite expensive, a strong point to Crown Spas and Pools is that it offers financing plans via FinanceIt to help clients get their dream patio covers without burdening their wallets in one go.
On the downside, we’re bummed to hear that repair services under warranty don’t include labourers’ and visitation fees.
A few clients we’ve spoken with were apparently charged $160 to have staff inspect the issue with their project before being able to claim their warranty-covered maintenance services and fixes.
Pros
- Does free-standing and semi-enclosed patio covers
- Offers financing plans
- Has online catalogues of different furniture brands
Cons
- Currently doesn’t offer consultation services
- Reports on maintenance fees not being part of warranty services
Customer Reviews
Excellent customer service, from start to finish
“Starts from the owners down, top-notch customer service, reasonable prices, and they do not forget about you once you make your purchase. Bought our hot tub 10 years ago and still getting great customer service, including in-house service almost immediately after requesting it. Highly recommend if you are interested in purchasing a hot tub, spa, swimming pool, chemicals, or anything related, you give them a visit.” – Eric Benson
Prompt and accessible staff
“I must say the staff at crown has been a pleasure to deal with since day one. The service was always prompt. They returned messages and phone calls within a reasonable amount of time. I used them for chemicals and pool equipment. They replaced my heater, filter, and pump. They have knowledgable staff and good products. If I had an issue it was quickly resolved. I would recommend them to anyone.” – JT Timber
4. Blue Chip Decks

What we love about Blue Chip Decks is that it uses natural wood for its pergola and privacy screen projects.
Customers may choose from cedar, treated wood, or capped composite decking – a hybrid of recycled wood and plastics – making it maintenance-free.
Given that wood is prone to rotting and cracking, we appreciate the company for utilising eco-friendly coating products to treat its array of wood building materials.
When wood is treated, it makes it less prone to rotting, warping, and cracking. This is good news for their patio covers – they can stay beautiful and durable for quite a long time.
Since they’re also eco-friendly, workers and customers won’t have to worry about damaging the environment and planet further.
A plus point to the company is that it offers great warranty periods for workmanship. Upon checking, most warranties last five years, although some of its partner manufacturers may offer longer warranty periods.
On the downside, we were slightly bummed that the company’s patio cover lineup is quite limited. Most are pergolas, which means that the roof isn’t fully covered.
On the bright side, Blue Chips also uses stone and metal building materials along with its wood options.
We recommend using these materials together to create pergolas with interesting textures, lines, and overall designs.
Another drawback we’re disappointed to hear is that the staff can be a little tricky to get ahold of, which can be inconvenient for clients needing an urgent response.
Pros
- Uses wood, stone, and metal building materials
- Uses eco-friendly coating materials
- Offers long-lasting warranty periods
Cons
- Has a smaller array of pergola designs
- Can be difficult to contact at times
Customer Reviews
Takes great attention to detail
“From initial contact to the finishing touches on our custom 600-square-foot deck/screen room, the Blue Chip experience was beyond incredible. The attention to detail is like nothing I’ve ever seen. The professionalism and responsiveness of Cal, Trevor, and Bryan were outstanding. If you want the very best, you want Blue Chip.” – Kevin Bailey
Project was finished stunningly and on time
“We were really impressed by Blue Chip Decks from the moment we started speaking to them about designing and installing a deck for our backyard. We were also on a very tight schedule in terms of when we needed our deck finished and they really rose to the challenge of keeping us informed and making this happen with a lot of time to spare. Anytime we needed clarification they responded quick through emails or through calls. When building the deck they were very professional and worked efficiently and showed pride in their work. We have had so many compliments about our deck and we are so happy to show it off! Thank you Blue Chip Decks!” – Daniella Greco

Windeck is a primary builder of all sorts of features that highlight outdoor spaces. We looked into its previous projects and were amazed by the patio deck covers and pergolas it has built.
We also love how they are offered in different styles: free-standing or attached, as well as open or semi-enclosed.
Their wide selection enables clients to select the type of patio cover they want for their needs and home style.
In terms of materials, Windeck currently only uses vinyl, stone, and metal. Unfortunately, it doesn’t use wooden building materials for all of its projects.
That said, we are pleased that the company sources powder-coated materials from several reputable suppliers within Winnipeg, which tells of the finished projects’ top-tier quality.
We’re also pleased that Windeck’s suppliers offer warranty periods of five to 20 years for its materials and projects.
Despite the installer not using natural wood in any of its projects, we were happy to learn that it uses vinyl with wood-like patterns and textures.
For us, these alternatives are more cost-effective but still stylish and natural looking.
Another favourable point to Windeck is that it offers assessment services before executing any project.
We think the assessment period helps clients understand which materials and designs work best for their home layout.
We’re just slightly disappointed to hear that quotation requests are not actually free. From what we’re told by previous clients, the quotes will actually be included in the final invoice after the project is finished.
Pros
- Uses powder-coated materials
- Uses building materials from prime suppliers
- Long warranty periods
- Assesses properties to evaluate which pergola design will work best
Cons
- Currently does not use natural wood
- Reports on quote estimations not being free of charge
Customer Reviews
A pleasant experience with the staff and project overall
“We are very pleased with the finished product, it’s exactly how we envisioned and discussed with them. The crew was very professional, courteous, and cleaned up every day, you would never know they were there. We have already had many people stop and compliment the porch, would highly recommend them!” – M. Labossiere
Windeck’s staff helped us choose the best patio pattern
“Mel Dueck met with us and helped my wife and me choose the Duradek pattern that would best suit our patio deck. Mel was instrumental in the decision and we are so glad he was. My wife and I would probably not have chosen this pattern. After seeing the finished product we both agreed it was the best choice for our home and love the product. During construction one of our rain downspouts was damaged and what really impressed me was one evening one of Windeck’s employees returned and replaced the damaged downspout without us mentioning the problem. We’re so glad we choose to use Windeck and are now repeat customers.” – Dwight Gelhorn
