If you’re looking for a nursing home to look after your elderly loved ones while you work from far away, The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg – fondly called The Home – might be the right place to consider.

Upon checking, they offer all sorts of services, from dental to dietary, foot care, physical therapy, eye care, and hearing care. Hospital facilities such as radiology machines and lab equipment are also reportedly available in this institution.

That said, we think these services are convenient for monitoring the conditions of elderly patients, especially those with chronic illnesses. Support equipment sets are also available for disabled elderly to move around comfortably.

Another highlight of The Home for us is its housekeeping services that establish a home-like environment for its senior dependents. Staff are assigned to do the laundry, cleaning, cooking, and other chores that maintain the comfort and cleanliness of the place.

Visitation hours are from Monday to Sunday, and The Home encourages people to visit during the afternoon and early evening.

Perhaps a downside to this care home is that it is apparently sometimes understaffed, with some former caregivers mentioning a toxic work environment (most likely due to their load).

That said, the toxicity led some of The Home’s best caregivers to resign, leading to the place being understaffed sometimes. With the place lacking competent caregivers, the level of elederly care also diminishes

Pros

  • Visitation schedules are available every day
  • Provides mobility and support devices

Cons

  • Some instances of understaffing
  • Reports on work environment being toxic

Customer Reviews

Staff were wonderful in taking care of my father

“My father was here for a few months before moving to his first choice care home. I was pretty nervous as this was my first time moving a parent into a facility. The staff were all so wonderful. They definitely go above and beyond! Thank you all!” – Leila Pompana

Residents are contented and comfortable

“I volunteered here a couple times and it seems lovely. The staff were all really fantastic and the place is quite comfortably appointed.  The residents seemed content and as comfortable as one can expect when old and in ill health. Certainly seems like a very nice place where people are cared for.” – Emily CPY

If you’re looking for an inclusive senior care home, Southeast Personal Care Home would be a great fit for your requirements.

The institution offers its elder care services to native and non-native citizens of Winnipeg. We’re happy to hear feedback from family members saying that their elderly loved ones enjoyed their stay in the home.

To date, Southeast Personal Care Home’s services aren’t open for home care. However, we appreciate it for providing quite an array of welfare services, such as nursing care, medical care, and dental services.

Besides healthcare benefits, the elder care home also has other services that promote cleanliness and pleasant appearances among the elder patients. These include salon services, housekeeping, and laundry services.

Although, we were a bit iffy about some feedback about patients not doing well in the care home. The good news is that the same patients are now doing better and loving their stay at the place, after management made sure to address their concerns.

We hope that the team at Southeast Personal Care Home improves the consistency of its service quality in order to prevent the same scenario from happening again.

After all, the reason why these seniors are placed in their care is because clients trust them to look after their loved ones.

Pros

  • Services are open to native and non-native citizens
  • Visitation hours are available every day

Cons

  • Services might not be open for home care
  • Instances of elderly patients not being well-groomed at all times

Nurse Next Door is another well-known elder care facility that has multiple branches spanning Canada. Besides having multiple locations, we found that it also offers quite an array of care services for elderly people, as well as infants and adults!

Some of the services Nurse Next Door offers include post-operative care, respite care, nursing care, memory care, comprehensive home care, and around-the-clock care.

If there’s one service we commend this institution for, it’s its end-of-life care. We praise the caregivers and other assigned healthcare professionals for providing optimal care and support to patients until they no longer need it.

That level of care may not reverse the clock, but we believe that it also comforts families and perhaps prepare them for the inevitable passing of their dear elderly loved ones.

Besides exceptional end-of-life and respite care, we also appreciate Nurse Next Door for offering senior transportation accompaniment–a service that helps patients travel anywhere they want!

The best part is that this service isn’t limited to local travel. Caregivers may help patients book flights and accommodations, as well as accompany them to the airport or even during the whole trip.

But despite the amazing selection of services and competent caregivers, we are a bit concerned about some clients mentioning discrepancies regarding the services they availed of, with their invoices reflecting overcharging or additional costs they weren’t notified about.

We’ve also heard that caregivers aren’t treated well by the management. We hope that this is addressed promptly as caregivers have the tough job of looking after the aged and ensuring their well-being.

Pros

  • Offers senior transportation services
  • Has end-of-life care services

Cons

  • Some reports on needing to improve personnel care
  • Feedback on invoices having discrepancies

Home Instead is one of the most notable facilities that offer various types of elder care. Upon checking, it is currently limited to home care, but its array of services is excellent for promoting wellness among its patients.

Some of its noteworthy services are personal care, hospice support, chronic illness care, and post-surgery care. We think that these services are fundamental in maintaining the welfare and safety of the elderly dependents.

In terms of illnesses, their home care service specialises in Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, diabetes, and arthritis. Home Instead has well-trained professionals and high-end facilities that cater to these illnesses, which means comfort and wellness for the patients.

And yes, even post-surgery care seems to be top-notch as it includes physical therapy exercises, nursing care, and personal care. We’ve received reports of elderly recovering well from their surgeries, thanks to the patience and compassion of the caregivers.

Additionally, their array of services is customisable. You can tailor the care packages to establish a healthy and comfortable space for your grandparents or aging parents.

That said, since Home Instead’s care services are only for the home, it might not be suitable for elderly patients with disabilities who need facilities and devices that only assisted living institutions or retirement homes can offer.

Pros

  • Offers memory care services
  • Has post-surgery care specialists
  • Care packages are customizable

Cons

  • Services are limited to home care as of now
  • Might not be suitable for elderly with disabilitie

Lindenwood Retirement Living operates under the Winnipeg Mennonite Seniors Care Inc., a noteworthy elder care institution in the city.

From what we’ve heard, this retirement home anchors on Mennonite Christian principles as well as teachings of the Bible and the church.

Perhaps the highlight of this elder care facility is its current nursing homes are cleaned and well-maintained. We checked it out ourselves and were pleased with the landscaped outdoor spaces and well-equipped indoor areas.

Such spaces are suitable for all sorts of physical and social activities, as well as fostering a safe, comfortable, and loving second home.

Besides the faith-based mission and vision and well-maintained spaces, we also praise this elder care home for providing restaurant-quality food, thanks to its catering services.

We checked its menu and were wowed by the healthy and scrumptious dishes elderly patients get to eat. However, we found it a little disappointing that the food quality is inconsistent, with reports of the patients’ meals being bland sometimes.

Another drawback we found is that the caregivers are apparently not always conscientious about taking care of the patients. For example, some of the elderly were said to be left on their own and had to ask for assistance from staff too many times before being attended to.

We’ve also received feedback on the care home not being well-lit, which makes it harder for the elderly to see what they’re looking for or navigate through the care home. The dim lights also establishes a gloomy place that isn’t ideal for anyone to live in.

Pros

  • Has its own catering services
  • Indoor and outdoor spaces are suitable for all sorts of activities

Cons

  • Feedback on some elderly not being taken care of
  • Instances of inconsistent food quality
