Foreign students received uplifting news in 2023 when the SAT finally embraced the digital format. It’s also something that my family welcomed since my younger cousins were due to take theirs in a couple of years or so.

In light of the changes, some of us wondered how it would affect the exam preparation. Thankfully, most of that has been answered swiftly when institutions followed through with meaningful adjustments, including their own online SAT prep programs.

For international students, the preparations are likely to stay the same for most exam takers, which is a combination of online or in-person prep school or tutoring—and a lot of self-studying.

In our lovely city, we’re fortunate to have facilities that cater to both digital and traditional methods. And today, we’re looking at some of the best options for online and in-person SAT prep in Winnipeg.

1. Oxford Learning

Website: https://www.oxfordlearning.com/

Social media: Facebook

Contact info: (204) 430 4540

Address: 3244 Portage Avenue, Unit J

Business hours:

  • Mon-Fri: 9:00 am – 8:00 pm
  • Sat-Sun: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Oxford Learning offers classic, in-person classes for SAT preparation. They use customized, simple, and clear learning programs for one-on-one tutoring or SAT group sessions.

The one-on-one prep features 35 in-class hours, a custom workbook, and various take-home assignments. There’s little flexibility on the table, but you can choose if you wish to complete the course in 8 or 10 weeks’ time.

Meanwhile, the group learning sessions use a 20-hour program with its respective workbook and take-home assignments.

On the flip side, the focus on cognitive learning may not cater to everyone’s preferences. There is also the lack of in-home tutoring and online learning sessions, even as an alternative.

What might help your decision, though, is taking into account that Oxford Learning has deep roots in Canada. So, there’s a strong track record behind the program and also a promising outlook.

Since 1984, the company has established over 125 learning centers across the country, including what we have in Winnipeg—its lone extension in Manitoba.

Pros

  • Offers monthly payment plans via iFinance
  • Focuses on cognitive learning development
  • Customized programs for individual students

Cons

  • In-home tutoring is not availableLimited flexibility on courses and schedule

Caring Tutors

“My daughter has been going to Oxford for 2 years, now. Her improvements in reading and writing have been outstanding, and the one-to-one tutoring has really helped her settle down and focus. Great environment, lots of caring tutors.”

— The Original Daily, Google Review

Effective Customized Learning Plan

“I can’t share enough how impressed I am with the staff at Oxford Learning. I took my daughter here after some concerns with her learning progress, and with the school system. Alexis and Sara conducted a comprehensive assessment, consulted with the school, and developed a customized learning plan for my daughter.”

2. Sylvan Learning

Social media: Facebook

Contact info: (204) 480 2569

Address: 530 Kenaston Blvd., Suite 108

Business hours:

  • Mon-Fri: 9:00 am – 8:00 pm
  • Sat: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Sylvan Learning’s SAT programs are available in-center or via live, online sessions.

They also offer flexible hours to accommodate busy or conflicting schedules, which is simply a luxury to have.

According to them, SAT prep is usually 30 hours over a course of 8 weeks. However, this may go longer or shorter, depending on the goals, strengths, and weaknesses of the student.

Sylvan Learning’s flexible programs are excellent, but what I believe adds the most value to their offers is the complimentary access to Sylvan Prep Online, a dedicated online learning environment for all prep clients.

The 24/7 access to thousands of detailed video lessons and practice tests can prove very useful for students and parents who also want to get some reps at home.

Another strong side of Sylvan’s SAT prep package is analysis and reporting. This can be an important resource for students who need motivation or an area of focus so that they can gain meaningful improvements at their own pace.

Overall, I like Sylvan Learning’s more traditional approach to exam preparations. However, not having an in-home tutoring program is still a lost opportunity for them and the students.

The limited scheduling options, while not a deal-breaker, is also something that takes away from what are otherwise, solid SAT prep packages.

Pros

  • Offers flexible hours
  • 24/7 access to online resources
  • Good reporting and tracking practices

Cons

  • In-home tutoring is not available

Social media: Facebook

Contact info: (204) 809 7240

Address: Mountain Avenue, Winnipeg South

Business hours: Mon-Sun: 8:00 am – 9:00 pm

Tutor Doctor specializes in in-home and online tutoring services. Both prep settings, along with small group instruction, can also be combined in a single program if it’s aligned with the student’s goals, budget, and availability.

Aside from flexible tutoring methods and scheduling, I can see students benefitting most from having specialist SAT prep coaches across the board.

What’s limiting, though, is that the company does not have a location for drop-in or traditional classes, which is reasonably what others prefer for SAT prep.

All things considered, Tutor Doctor still has an excellent digital platform and a fine data-driven, student-friendly approach. They can be a reliable partner for learners who are actively seeking online and in-home SAT preparation.

Pros

  • Promotes data-driven approach
  • Customized tutoring depending on learning style

Cons

  • No drop-in and in-person consultation

A Perfect Match

“I have had a great experience so far with Prep Academy Tutors! With the uncertainty of the pandemic, we decided this was a perfect time to have extra support with our children’s education. Our tutor is a perfect match for my children.

He is professional, his French is superb, and his experience as a long time teacher really give us as parents the confidence that we are doing everything we can to ensure our children develop great study and homework habits.

The work is both supportive of their current work in school and works to fill in the gaps in learning for each of my children on an individual level. We are very thankful and plan on continuing with their service!”
