Diabetes Ahead 12 of Winnipeg’s Sweetest Sweet Shops

Diabetes Ahead: 13 of Winnipeg’s Sweetest Sweet Shops

We all know sugar is bad for us, but if it makes us happy, then who cares? Besides, sugar comes from plants, so it can’t be that bad, right?

If you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, here are 12 stores in Winnipeg that sell all sorts of candy, pastries, and ice cream.

1. Bulk Barn

Bulk Barn

No candy list would ever be complete without Bulk Barn. It’s the go-to shop for buying candy in bulk, so if you’ve got a party or just want to make some kids happy, this is the best store you can go to.

It’s got branches all over the city, so you’re never too far from one. Plus, as a bulk store, you can expect cheaper prices than anywhere else.

The store only sells big brands, but big brands still taste pretty good so it’s still worth checking out.

If you haven’t tried it yet, we recommend the yogurt-covered pretzels. If that’s not your thing, the dark chocolate-covered espresso beans are pretty addicting too.

2. For Us Bakery

For Us Bakery

The For Us Bakery is Winnipeg’s favorite bakery, best known for its cream-based offerings. The desserts are a blend of Asian and French, which may sound weird but tastes really good.

The Earl Grey Cupcakes, for example, are something we just can’t get enough of. If that’s a no for you, the cream puffs, cheese tarts, and crepe cakes are all very safe fan favorites.

We do have to warn you though that you can easily order more than you need. On our first visit, we each brought home enough food for 3 people just because of how good everything was!

3. Oh Doughnuts

Oh Doughnuts

Oh Doughnuts makes doughnuts, and it makes the best ones in town. There are literally dozens of flavors excluding the rotating ones.

From everything we’ve tasted, nothing fell short of delicious except for the white chocolate cardamom with pistachios—that was just okay. Everything else melts in your mouth, and it’s fun experimenting with which ones taste better hot or cold.

Whether you’re buying for a group or for yourself, your visit will be oh-so worth it. If you’re getting a box for a party or something though, we recommend getting the Bailey’s, cherry amaretto, double chocolate caramel, and pineapple curd doughnuts.

All of these have a hint of sourness in them that tastes great even two days after ordering.

4. Sweet City Candy

Sweet City Candy

Sweet City Candy is Winnipeg’s candy wonderland, specializing in colorful candies like candy canes, lollipops, and gummy bears.

The items here can be a bit overpriced, so it’s best you go for the special and exotic candies rather than the things you can find in 7-Eleven. The saltwater taffy and Turkish delight are some great examples of the special stuff.

You can also find some rare imported candy if you explore the place enough. We found some delicious Australian and German candies that we couldn’t find anywhere else!

5. Teeyah’s Candy, Soda, and Ice Cream

Teeyah's Candy, Soda, and Ice Cream

Teeyah’s is Winnipeg’s one-stop shop for sweets. All sorts of candied sodas and crazy ice cream flavors are available, plus there’s a bar where you can make your own floats!

We just briefly browsed the place on our visit, leaving with a few bottles. We can say though, that this looks like our dream hangout spot when we were in high school.

The seats are comfy and go well with a glass of cherry-flavored float. If you’re a kid and decide to go, resist the temptation to stay too long or you’ll never see this little paradise ever again.

6. Rocky Mountain Chocolate

Rocky Mountain Chocolate

Rocky Mountain has chocolate-covered everything! Apples, strawberries, and pretty much any other fruit you can think of can be turned into a sweet treat.

There’s a bunch of other stuff here too, like the bombs, ice cream bars, and quickies, but the candied apples are what everyone comes for. Rocky Mountain makes dozens of different chocolate-covered apples, and of course, each one’s worth a try.

We do have to tell you that although the themed apples look cute, they don’t taste as good as the regular flavors. Some just taste like fondant, which doesn’t really do the fruit any favors.

7. Sweet Tops Ice Cream

Sweet Tops Ice Cream

We all scream for Sweet Tops ice cream! The flavors are excellent, but the serving sizes are impeccable!

An order of two scoops that looks like four is unheard of in Winnipeg, especially with every other store being so stingy. Not this place though, because the staff will do everything to make sure you come back for more.

Our personal favorite is the chocolate-covered peanut waffle cone with the coconut island ice cream. The chocolate-covered waffle bowl is another go-to that never disappoints with some raspberry sundae.

If you’re ordering for sharing and have decided what your favorite flavor is, the 1L options are not to be missed. Keep in mind that a liter covers about 6 people.

8. Chocolatier Constance Popp

Chocolatier Constance Popp

Chocolatier Constance Popp serves chocolate and chocolate only. You can’t go wrong with anything here; I mean, who doesn’t love chocolate?

Bitter or sweet, or bittersweet, you bet there’s something here. If we were to choose though, the tri-bar and the sponge toffee bits bar are definitely must-tries.

If you’re a fruity kind of person, the fruit barks go really well with some dark chocolate caramel sauce. Just remember not to get lost in the sugar as we did, or you’ll end up in a sugar crash for the rest of the day.

9. Sweet Impressions

Sweet Impressions

Sweet Impressions is Canada’s solution for the genetically ungifted among us. All of the items are allergy-friendly, and that means nut-free, gluten-free, egg-free, and some items even have zero sugar!

If you’re allergic to anything else, the chef is very flexible and can easily customize your order. People usually come to order for events, and if you’re one of them, then we highly recommend the photo cookies to add some spice to your sweets.

The cakes are amazing too! In fact, we’d say they set Sweet Impressions among the best cake deliveries in Winnipeg.

If it’s just a small order though, you can’t go wrong with the vegan doughnuts and chocolatey brownie tarts. These are what we come back for, and we’ll keep coming back until we’re shooting insulin.

10. Purdys Chocolatier

Purdys Chocolatier

Everyone knows and loves Purdys, but wait until you go to the actual stores. The Purdys shops upgrade everyone’s favorite chocolates, plus it’s where new products are tested!

Perhaps the best thing you can do here is to buy some peanut brittle and ask the staff to dip it in chocolate. It might be too sweet for some people, but the friends we brought with us absolutely loved it.

As a bonus, the products here are much cheaper than in grocery stores.

11. Mordens of Winnipeg Candy Manufacturing

Mordens of Winnipeg Candy Manufacturing

Mordens of Winnipeg is the place to go for all things nuts and chocolate. The shop mostly sells boxes of chocolates that focus on variety, so you never get too much of one product.

We mostly go here just to find boxes to give to friends and family, and what we usually go for are the 2 section gift boxes and toasted coconut marshmallows.

The 2 section is split between one large section for chocolates, and an equally large section for nuts. If you’re not a chocolate person or just want an order that isn’t a varied box, then the toasted coconut mallows are must-tries.

12. Utoffeea

Utoffeea was named “Canada’s Best Toffee” in 2018, and after tasting it we can definitely see why! We tried their Cashew Original flavour, and were so impressed by how delicious the crunchy layered toffee bark was. We were happy to taste their toffee popcorn too; it’s like caramel corn but SO much better!

The shop in West St. Paul is at the same location as their production facility.. so while you’re shopping from their yummy selection of toffee treats, you can peek through the window and watch the magic unfold. All Utoffeea products are handmade from start to finish, and they’re also Gluten-free!

If you visit in the summertime, make sure you order a Utoffeea Sundae off their ice cream menu. It features soft serve ice cream topped with hot fudge, salted caramel, and little bits of Utoffeea… totally delicious!

If ordering online is more convenient for you, ordering from their website was easy and hassle-free. We were impressed by the selection of the online store, quick shipping time, and of course.. the delicious treats! Throughout the ordering process, communication with Utoffeea was excellent. They kept us informed about the status of our order and were quick to respond to any inquiries.

The quality of Utoffeea products was exceptional. Each treat is carefully handcrafted by a Red-Seal Chef with attention to detail. We particularly enjoyed the buttery flavour of the toffee.

In terms of cost, Utoffeea offers reasonable prices for their award winning toffee. We found the value to be worth the investment for such delicious treats.

13. Sweet Annie’s

Sweet Annie's

Sweet Annie’s is an ice cream shop that serves all those tasty-looking tv desserts you see in retro cafes. This small shop in Westmount loves to experiment with flavors and equally loves keeping everything colorful!

The iconic order is the butterscotch marshmallow, and we can definitely see why. It sort of tastes like peanut butter ice cream, and is a safe first order before you get into the more wacky flavors like chocolate pineapple.
