Find Peace and Adventure at Kings Park Winnipeg [A Local’s Guide]

You know those days when boredom hits hard and you start questioning your life choices? Well, that was me a few weeks ago.

I was lying on my couch, staring at the ceiling, counting the cobwebs (I found three, by the way), when I realized I needed a serious change of scenery.

Netflix wasn’t cutting it, and my cat had made it abundantly clear that he was tired of my constant attempts to engage him in deep conversation.

So, I decided to take action—I grabbed my phone and texted my adventure-loving friend, Mattie. She immediately replied, “Check out Kings Park. Trust me, it’s awesome!”

Having lived in Winnipeg my whole life, I’d never heard of that one. I thought Mattie was pulling my leg, “Kings Park? Is that like, royalty-approved or something?” I joked.

But Mattie was serious. She told me it was a hidden gem, and I had to see it to believe it.

Curiosity piqued, so I jumped in my car and headed towards Kings Park. I had my GPS set up, but it felt like I was driving to some secret location.

When I finally arrived, I was half expecting a hidden entrance guarded by knights or something.

But what I found was even better: a beautiful, sprawling park that seemed to be a world away from the urban hustle. The fresh air, the greenery, the serene ambiance—it was exactly what I needed.

Operating hours Monday to Sunday: 8 - 9 pm

Kings Park, nestled near the University of Manitoba and right by the Red River, is a charming 2.8-hectare lake.

It boasts a gorgeous waterfall, a rock garden that’s basically Instagram heaven, and a cool labyrinth that’s just waiting for you to get lost in (in a good way, of course).

Now, if you’re into walking or biking, there are about 2.6 kilometers of pathways winding through the park, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a breezy ride.

And for all dog lovers out there, they’ve got a spot where your furry friends can roam free without a leash.

But here’s the lowdown: unlike some of the other parks in Winnipeg, Kings Park doesn’t have a playground for the kids. And as for water activities or skating in the winter, sorry to burst your bubble, but the pond’s a bit too small for that jazz.

Things to Do at Kings Park

Enjoy the outdoors.

If you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors, you’ve picked the right spot! Kings Park has an awesome network of trails, perfect for all kinds of activities.

Whether you just want to take a casual walk, go for a bike ride, or really get into nature, there’s something here for you.

For an easy, laid-back experience, check out the paved paths. They’re great for a leisurely walk, a jog, or even a bike ride.

One of my favorite routes is the one that runs along the Red River. The riverside views are just stunning!

If you’re up for a bit more adventure, try the gravel paths. These will take you deeper into the park, through wooded areas and marshlands.

The surface is a bit looser, so it’s better for hiking or mountain biking.

Visit the Pagoda Gardens.

Pagoda Gardens is such a peaceful area to unwind and take in some beautiful scenery.

Imagine those vibrant flower beds all around, gardens that are perfectly landscaped, and right in the middle, a traditional Chinese pagoda that just takes the whole place to another level.

Plus, there’s a nice mix of plants and flowers too, giving you the time to reflect, enjoy a quiet moment, or snap some gorgeous photos.

The Carol Shields Memorial Labyrinth at Kings Park isn’t just a maze; it’s a haven perfect for a reflective walk. Designed to help you find some inner peace and clarity, it’s a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else.

When you walk the winding paths of the labyrinth, you can really get into a meditative zone. It’s a great way to practice mindfulness and just let go of the stresses of the day.

Trust me, take your time as you wander through—it’s all about the journey, not the destination.

You can also let your dog run around and have some fun at Kings Park. The area is really spacious, so your furry friend will have plenty of room to run free and socialize with other dogs.

Plus, it’s a great way for them to burn off some energy. Just a friendly reminder—being a good pet parent means scooping up after your pooch, so keep those poop bags handy!

Play soccer and baseball.

At Kings Park, there’s a designated area where you can play soccer. It’s huge and always well-kept, with those crisp white lines marking out the pitch.

Perfect for a kickabout with your buddies or even joining in on a local league game if you’re feeling up for it.

And if baseball’s more your speed, they’ve got you covered there too. They’ve got not one, but two regulation-sized baseball diamonds, complete with dugouts and all the bases you need.
