12 of the Most Savory and Comforting Soup Places in Winnipeg
Soup may not be soul food, but it’s definitely food for the soul. We always seek out soup for when we’re sick or need something to warm our bodies.
These 12 soup restaurants in Winnipeg know how to make soup, which is why we, along with countless others, keep coming back!
1. Spicy Noodle House
Spicy Noodle House is a household name in Winnipeg for its traditional Chinese cooking methods and fresh ingredients. There’s a wide variety of soups you can choose from, but not too much that you spend half an hour deciding what to get.
Our favorites are the spicy peanut noodle and BBQ duck soups. The spicy peanut tastes just as good as it sounds, and it tastes even better when it’s cold out!
True to its name, this restaurant’s soup spiciness is pretty up there, so be prepared to feel your ears ring. Sometimes though, the soups can be a bit too spicy that they end up muting all other flavors.
2. Dug & Betty’s
Dug & Betty’s is primarily an ice creamery, but the soups served here will make you question where you are. The soups are worthy of a high-end restaurant, with different French recipes served daily.
While the soup menu refreshes often, the potato and leek and tomato basil soups are staples. We suggest you try these since not only do they taste great, but second visits are easier if you know the soup you loved the last time will still be served.
If you’re lucky, you might even get to taste the seafood bisque. It’s loaded with tender shrimp and mussels that are more well-cooked than more expensive restaurants!
3. Pho No. 1
Pho No. 1 has made a name for itself thanks to its spicy peanut soup. Whether you’re sick, chilly, or want something filling, this soup will fulfill all your cravings.
If you want to try it out, then get the chicken variant. You can also order some spring rolls along with it for a very comforting and satisfying meal.
Another one of our favorites is the deluxe beef ride noodle soup. It’s a simple hearty meal with a decent spicy kick.
This is also one of the few Winnipeg restaurants where take-out tastes just as good as dining in. Just put your soup in the microwave and it’ll still taste just as fresh.
4. FrenchWay
FrenchWay believes in freshness and attention to detail, and it really shows in the food’s taste. This cafe sells the usual French soups like onion soup, but it does it very well.
The cafe is primarily a bakery, so we suggest buying some pastries to dip into your soup. The scones and garlic bread taste amazing with some onion soup.
Another dish worth trying is the ginger carrot soup. It’s nice and thick, and one bowl can easily fill you up for hours.
When it comes to comfort food, the little bowls at FrenchWay will comfort you the way your mom used to.
5. Vientiane Restaurant
Vientiane is where we go for eat-outs with friends because of its big servings and authentic flavors. The curry soups are some of the best we’ve tried, and they go well with a side of rice and pad nut.
This is one of the few restaurants that we start eating immediately instead of taking pictures first! The vegetables and meats are also added very generously, so you know you’re getting your money’s worth.
6. Magic Thailand
We’ve been ordering from Magic Thailand for years, and the soups still taste as good as when we first tried them out. This place’s noodle soups satisfy all our Thai cravings.
The servings here are so big that you’ll struggle to finish everything yourself. The staff are really generous too, and we’ve had extra soup placed in our take-out bowls more than once!
Aside from all of this, the best part is how attentive the cooks are. You can have every possible allergy, and they’ll find a way to fine-tune your order!
7. Dairy Maid & Deli
Dairy Maid has just four soups to choose from, but each one deserves lots of praise. Eat these with some sandwiches and you’ll have a very heartwarming meal.
On our first visit, we had some Caesar salad with some tomato soup, and it was some of the best soup we’ve ever had. It had a very homemade taste that we’ve been running back to for years.
The soups are served as sides, so don’t expect huge portions. If it’s just the soup you want, we suggest getting all four options and nothing else for a cheap but exciting meal.
8. T.H. Dang
T.H. Dang has been in Winnipeg for many years and has become one of our go-to’s for Vietnamese soup.
What makes this place stand out from the rest is how much care is put into each ingredient, so we’ve never had a bad dish in all our years of ordering. The menu continuously evolves too, so things never get boring.
The meat-based soups are the best things you can try here. If your order has crispy meat, you can trust that each piece is fried and grilled to perfection.
We had the crispy spicy pork soup a couple of times, and the meat never got soggy even after soaking in soup for half an hour.
9. Cafe Carlo
Italian soups are cooked to perfection at Cafe Carlo. The corn and chorizo soup stands out in particular, and all we can say is it’s spicy and comforting.
The seafood chowder is excellent too, and tastes better with some beer on tap. You can really taste the freshness of the mussels and shrimp in each bowl!
There’s also free bread that tastes good with Cafe Carlo’s homemade butter spread. If you dip the butter-coated bread in your chowder, then you’ll have a very delizioso experience.
10. Dancing Noodle
Dancing Noodle has exceptional noodle soups that come with very generous fillers and toppings. If you order the Lanzhou beef noodle soup, expect to have more beef than soup!
One of the things this restaurant prides itself in is how everything is made from scratch, even the noodles. The hand-pulled Lanzhou-style noodles add a nice soft texture to each bowl, which tastes great with tender meat.
11. Mae Sunee Thai Cuisine
Friendly staff and bursts of flavor are what await you at Mae Sunee. While the portions here are smaller than in other soup places, the quality picks up the slack.
You can trust that everything included in your bowl is tender and seasoned to perfection. Out of all the soups, the tom kha gai is the star of the show with its familiar and very addicting flavors.
If you want something different, the pineapple red curry is pretty good. It consists of mussels, pineapple, coconut milk, and curry paste—you can imagine just how good that all tastes!
Just be ready to wait a bit for a table since this place usually gets packed from the moment the doors open.
12. Bernstein’s Deli
Bernstein’s Deli has been serving good soup for nearly 40 years, and it’s easy to see why. The matzo ball soup is Bernstein’s specialty, but the other soups honestly taste much better.
There’s also a refreshing “Vegetarian Soup of the Day” thing going on that makes for great take-out food. If you bring home a bowl of whatever’s being served for the day, it’ll cure any sickness or sadness you may have.
