When our boss announced his retirement, we planned a surprise party to show our appreciation. Some of my coworkers were in charge of booking a small event venue and finding a caterer, while I was tasked with ordering a custom cake.
We agreed on a farm-themed design with alpacas and apple trees, where he’ll spend his golden years. And of course, it had to be chocolate fudge—his favorite.
Winnipeg has plenty of cake shops, so the tricky part was finding the right one. After browsing portfolios, reading customer reviews, and comparing prices, we were able to narrow down our search.

Indulge is a cozy cafe and bakery at the heart of downtown. It’s a local favorite for afternoon tea and coffee, but many come here to order custom cakes for all occasions.
From weddings and birthdays to gender reveals, the bakers can handle complex designs using fondant or buttercream. They also offer cakes in a wide range of sizes, making it easier to choose for small to large gatherings.
Out of all their flavors, clients liked Red Velvet the most. Made with high-quality ingredients, it always comes out soft, moist, and packed with flavor without being too sweet. It’s the kind of cake that makes you go back for an extra slice.
The fruits, however, might not always be fresh. Some clients said they looked old enough to be dehydrated.
We think Indulge is great at catering to different dietary needs. Their bakers can create gluten-free and allergen-friendly alternatives, so you can enjoy the treats without worry.

Sweet Impressions is 100% nut free. None of their baked goods has peanuts or tree nuts, making them a safe choice if you have severe allergies.
Aside from their allergen-free cakes, they have plenty of vegan options, which include Salted Caramel Chocolate and Vanilla Confetti.
Many clients said that the flavors are rich and decadent, while the texture is soft and perfectly moist. However, consistency might be a problem as a few had complained about the cakes being dry and crumbly.
For weddings, they do offer tasting boxes, allowing you to sample different flavors with your partner or family. It should make you feel more confident about your final decision.
What surprised us is that their bakers are able to fulfill requests 5 days prior to the celebration—including weddings. They even offer city-wide delivery services, so you won’t have to worry about getting the cake to the venue in one piece.

If you want a custom cake that won’t cost an arm and a leg, Sweet Retreat can deliver quality for a reasonable price. The minis, which are good for two, cost only $45, while two-tier options start around $350.
We like that they offer all the classic flavors, as well as a wide array of fillings, such as Toffee Salted Caramel, Cotton Candy, and Lemon.
For specialty cakes, you’re free to choose any combination. Plus, you can add a drip, and it won’t cost extra (except for metallic, red, and black).
Clients were very impressed with the bakers’ artistic capabilities, especially for custom orders. They can whip up any beautiful decoration based on your references, but some of their most popular designs are florals and macaron toppers.
The only downside is that Sweet Retreat doesn’t cater to dietary restrictions. Compared to other shops, you won’t find vegan, dairy-free, egg-free, and gluten-free alternatives here.

Sugar + Salt is one of our favorite cupcake spots in Winnipeg, but it’s also an excellent place to order cake.
Custom cakes are one of their specialties here. The bakers can make the most creative designs that taste as good as they look.
Because they only make small batches per day, they can really focus on quality, which results in richer flavors and better textures. This, however, means that you won’t find a lot of ready-made options in the bakery.
Besides the sweet treats, clients were impressed with their customer service. The booking process was a breeze, while the team really took the time to listen during consultations, ensuring that they were all on the same page.
More than anything, we appreciate that they only require a $50 deposit. You can pay the remaining balance during pick-up.

Kayla was incredible to work with to make a surprise custom cake for a birthday party for us. She was so quick to reply and brought so much to the creative process, but yet still allowed for ideas to flow from us too. I picked up Mother’s Day scones and cookies during this process as well that were gorgeous and delicious. Raspberry lemon was super tasty (although not very lemony, it was still fresh without being overly sweet). I’ve tasted the confetti/sprinkle cake as well and it was also delicious. Going to come back to Sugar and Salt for my next custom cake needs in just a month again and can’t wait to try another flavour.

As they say, any day is a good day to eat cake. For ordinary moments that need a touch of sweetness, you can head over to Bita Bakery, where the displays are always lined with mouthwatering confections.
Japanese cheesecakes and roll cakes are staples here, which you can usually order per slice. They come in a range of flavors, but they always turn out light, airy, and perfectly sweet.
We like that Bita Bakery also accepts special orders. Although the team mostly does single-tier birthday requests, the designs can be pretty intricate, including rosettes and Lambeth piping.
Aside from the sweet treats, patrons admired the bakery’s welcoming atmosphere. The friendly and attentive staff made the booking process stress-free for everyone.
However, there are no tables and chairs to lounge on, so you have to grab what you want and go.
