Jensen’s Nursery & Garden Centre is one of the oldest and most renowned plant nurseries in Winnipeg.
For over 40 years, green thumbs of different skill levels trusted this place for items that will highlight their yards and gardens.
We took the liberty of visiting the nursery and were pleased with its diverse selection of plants.
The garden centre currently carries tropical flowers, perennial greens, shrubs, cacti, succulents, air plants, and trees, among others.
Besides the in-store selection, we also appreciate Jensen’s ‘Plant Search’ section on its website.
It makes it easier for people to choose the type of plant they want and find out if the store has stocks available for them.
That said, it’s worth mentioning that some of the tree options reportedly have subpar quality or are from years ago.
We recommend visiting the nursery so you can check which trees are worth getting for your yard – and so you can inspect the quality for yourself.
Jensen’s also offers landscaping services, which we think is great for green thumbs who need professional help in handling their baby plants and cultivating their garden.
It’s also a plus that the plant nursery has gardening tools and decor items in its inventory.
A slight downside though is that some of the items are reportedly at least $10 pricier than what other garden centres and online shops offer.
Pros
- Carries a diverse selection of plants and trees
- Has a ‘Plant Search’ section on its website
- Also offers landscaping services
Cons
- Select trees have subpar quality
- Items are pricier than other stores
Customer Reviews
They take pride in their work and landscaping expertise
“Our experience with Jensen Nursery was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we walked in we were treated like a family member. We were not rushed into purchasing trees we wanted. They sat down with us and discussed what our space size was and they made recommendations on what would be good for our space. They came and planted the trees and provided great service. They take pride in their work and it shows. We have more landscaping needs and will be dealing with them again.” – Tara Leigh
Loved their selection of plans and gardening tools
“First time going there since we just moved to the area and I was very impressed at the quality of their plants and prices! I also had a great conversation about some grasses to a staff who was so kind to help me figure out if they had that particular grass – they didn’t at the time, but I ended up picking another. Will for sure be back!!” – Kim Barubak

If you’re after growing your plants from seeds, then Sage Garden Greenhouses may be the right place for you.
The nursery carries more than 20 kinds of seeds of flowers, herbs, grass, and vegetables. We love that the diverse inventory caters to different kinds of gardeners.
In terms of its nursery, Sage Garden Greenhouses carries plant cuttings, seedlings, and propagated variations in its store.
What we like about these options is that they make building a garden more manageable, especially for those struggling with growing greens from seeds.
We’re also giving plus points to this nursery for carrying special fertilisers for seedlings, which we think makes it less intimidating for people to take care of baby plants at home.
And if convenience or beginner-friendly gardening is what you’re after, we’re pleased to find herb and mushroom growing kits available in this nursery.
That said, we’re just not too pleased to hear about the nursery’s lack of responsiveness sometimes. Apparently, customers occasionally feel that the nursery takes too long to respond to calls and emails regarding wrong or broken orders.
On a brighter note, we’re happy to learn that the staff are quick to apologise and make it a point to render better services to all customers.
As a gardening centre, we have to give it to Sage Garden Greenhouses for advocating sustainability. For instance, they accept old plastic containers for reuse and recycling.
Do note, however, that it currently only accepts its own brand of containers for this recycling programme. The nursery is yet to accept planters bought from other places.
Pros
- Diverse selection of seeds
- Has special fertilisers for seedlings
- Carries herbs and mushroom growing kits
- Accepts old plastic containers for reuse and recycle
Cons
- Could improve on responsiveness
- Only accepts its own containers for recycling

This nursery and garden centre has everything you need
“Love Sage Garden and the staff is always friendly and helpful. If you’re looking for something unique (lots of unique and healthy plants) and it’s not there, Dave will try to find the plant for you. Everything from soil to seeds to plants is organic. The warmth, the smell, the lushness of plants… For those saying they won’t go because of a mask mandate, educate yourself, there is a reason. Instead, think of how you can support people who have given so much by providing knowledge and/or product, to the community at large.” – Lori Lee
Great air plant selection
“I was able to fill my needs in my quest for Air plants to fill my coconut shells and now both plants and shells are on display complimenting each 🤗, thanks again for your service!” Ted Kleiner
3. St. Mary’s Nursery & Garden Centre
CRITERIA | RATING |
SELECTION OF PLANTS | ★★★☆☆ 4/5 |
NURSERY | ★★★☆☆ 3.5/5 |
Clean and organised | ★★☆☆☆ 2/5 |
Spacious and easy to navigate | ★★★★★ 5/5 |

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION | ★★★☆☆ 3.5/5 |
St. Mary’s Nursery & Garden Centre is another notable and trusted place for baby and mature plants.
Customers commonly mention its impressive selection of perennials – plants that can live more than two years and withstand most weather conditions.
Given that Winnipeg’s climate can be extremely cold most of the time, we appreciate that there is a nursery that offers indoor and outdoor plants suitable all year round.
The nursery also carries various types of seeds of herbs, vegetables, and flowering plants, which we think is perfect for those who want to start their own home nurseries.
It even offers trees, although we recommend asking staff first if they have stocks since some trees need a specific season to be planted and grown.
While we love St. Mary’s broad selection of seeds, flowering plants, and trees, we’re a bit disappointed that it has fewer cacti and succulent options compared to other garden centres.
But we’re going to forgive this limitation as the nursery houses other plants that are suitable for growing indoors or in partial sun and shade.
On the downside, we’re not too pleased to hear about the nursery’s lack of quality control.
Some customers we interviewed complained about some of their potted plants having bugs in them, with a few infiltrating their other garden plants.
We hope St. Mary’s would be more diligent in monitoring its plants to keep harmful pests at bay and maintain the welfare of its greeneries and customers.
Pros
- Great place for perennial plants
- Carries various kinds of seeds
Cons
- Limited cacti and succulent selection
- Could improve on quality control

A haven for indoor and outdoor plants
“This is one of my favourite happy places to go to. Aside from having a great selection of outdoor plants, they still carry a large selection of indoor plants( which is what I wanted). Enjoy cruising indoor and outdoor for stock! Staff stopped me twice to make sure I was served!
They also carry gift products too!” – Dawn Block
Great perennial selection with reasonable prices
“The selection of perennials is unbeatable. Very well priced. If you’re only going to go to 1 Greenhouse south of the city this is the one to hit!” – Grant S.
4. DJ Paterson Garden Centre

SELECTION OF PLANTS | ★★★★★ 5/5 |
NURSERY | ★★★☆☆ 3.75/5 |
Clean and organised | ★★★☆☆ 3.5/5 |
Spacious and easy to navigate | ★★★★☆ 4/5 |

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION | ★★★★☆ 4/5 |
When it comes to flowering plants, ferns, and crawling greens, we have to give it to DJ Paterson Garden Centre for carrying a wide selection of these.
As a plant nursery, we’re pleased that it carries perennial, annual, tropical, and air-type flowering plants in its greenhouse.
We were also impressed to find these flowering plants neatly arranged in rows and containers, which we think makes it more pleasant for customers to explore the garden centre.
When we visited, we also found ornamental shrubs and young trees available in-store.
We actually appreciate the nursery for making these ready for transplanting for any garden in Winnipeg.
Should you need to order many plants, DJ Paterson currently offers delivery service for bulk orders.
It’s just unfortunate that delivery services are limited to just bulk orders. You won’t be able to avail this option if you’re just ordering a handful of plants, which is a tad disappointing.
On a brighter note, another strong point of this nursery is that it offers landscaping services. We enquired and found that it does irrigation systems, rock gardens, sodding, ponds, lighting installation, retaining walls, and tree and shrub installations.
Ironically, though, some of its driveways and garden paths appear to be uneven and cracked. Perhaps they need to do a little landscaping touch-up themselves.
Customers also noted that they had to be a little careful in going inside the nursery as the uneven path could cause accidents.
Pros
- Offers a wide selection of greeneries
- Broad range of landscaping services
Cons
- Delivery is only for bulk orders
- Could improve on maintaining its own space

Best place to get grass seeds
“Always very knowledgeable and friendly. And their grass seed is the best !! 100% perennial unlike the stuff at the box stores which won’t last the winter. My lawn looks like a thick lush green carpet year after year thanks to them. They know their stuff !! I highly recommend DJ Patersons on Portage Avenue!” – Rob Lipps
Staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable
“Loved this greenhouse! I usually shop at other greenhouses, but both were too far for me to frequent. So I tried a local greenhouse and I’m sure glad I did. Staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Prices compared to Ron Paul’s. The plants were top notch! DJ Paterson’s is family owned and operated. Great place for new gardeners looking to gain more knowledge on plants and gardening. Great place for seasoned gardeners too! Highly recommend and will definitely be returning.” – Aimie Enns

Lacoste Garden Centre is another notable nursery and greenhouse in Winnipeg.
For over 75 years, this family-owned business has been providing landscaping services, gardening supplies, and locally grown baby and mature plants.
In terms of its nursery, the garden centre has an impressive selection of annuals, perennials, succulents, and air plants.
It’s also great to find bonsai available in this garden centre. We think these are perfect for those who plan to build rock or Oriental-style gardens.
And if you need help tending to your bonsai, hanging plants, and flowers, you’ll be glad to know that this garden centre offers landscaping services.
A slight limitation though is that most of Lacoste’s plants are the indoor type. Those looking for outdoor plants may need to look elsewhere, unfortunately.
As of writing, the nursery’s only outdoor greens are palm trees and various kinds of fruit-bearing shrubs and trees.
On a brighter note, customers do love that their indoor plants are healthy and of superior quality.
We’re also pleased to hear that items for delivery arrive intact and ready for transferring to any garden.
Do note, however, that delivery times for different areas in Winnipeg vary.
So, we recommend asking when your goods will likely arrive so you can plan your gardening schedule accordingly.
Pros
- Wide selection of indoor plants
- Also has bonsai trees
Cons
- Only carries indoor plants
- Delivery times aren’t the same for different areas

An excellent garden centre all year round
“I find Lacostes Garden centre to be excellent 99 percent of the time. Very knowledgeable staff and huge selection with a great mix of annuals and perennials. Priced right in the middle. Always enjoy my visits!!” – BP
