River Heights: A Winnipeg Neighborhood Adventure

I still remember my first walk in River Heights as if it were yesterday. The buildings are stunning — a mix of old homes with new bits, each with its own tale.

But it’s more than just looks; it’s the vibe. There’s warmth and friendliness here as you wander, whether you’re stopping in small shops or eating at a local cafe.

Now, let me show you around this neighborhood where to find the best eateries and which parks offer quiet breaks from the bustle of city life. I’ll help you see why this place is more than just a spot — it’s a special place full of charm and character!

Best Time to Visit River Heights in Winnipeg

The best time to visit River Heights depends on what you want to experience. For warm weather and outdoor fun, visit from June to September, perfect for strolling under the canopy of mature trees.

But if you prefer cooler weather and fewer crowds, spring (May) and fall (October) are good options.

Things to Do at River Heights in Winnipeg

1. Take a self-guided architectural walking tour.

One of my favorite things to do here is to go on a self-guided architectural walking tour. You’ll be amazed by the gorgeous historic homes this place has, some dating all the way back to the early 1900s!

It has a mix of architectural styles too, from classy Georgian to cozy Tudor, and even some Arts and Crafts gems.

Just grab a map from the River Heights Community Center or find one online, and you’re all set to explore these lovely streets and soak in the rich history of the neighborhood.

2. Explore the shops and restaurants on Academy Road.

Academy Road has this super cute street packed with all sorts of cool stuff – think quirky shops, cozy cafes, and some seriously delicious eats. I’m talking handmade goodies, unique finds, and food that’ll make your taste buds sing.

And when the weather’s nice – which, let’s be real, is not all year round in Winnipeg – you’ve got to snag a spot on one of those sidewalk patios. There’s nothing better than immersing yourself in the sun while munching on some tasty grub.
