Bored of flat activities? Vertical Adventures Winnipeg takes you to new heights! [Literally!]

I can still clearly recall the very first time I sought to experience this kind of thrill—it all started with me, slouched on my couch, scrolling through the same old options on my phone.

Movies? Nope, I’ve seen them all.

Cooking? Burnt toast doesn’t count as haute cuisine.

I needed an adventure, a break from the mundane.

Cue the lightbulb moment: Why not try something daring? Rock climbing had always intrigued me, despite my total lack of coordination.

So, with a mix of excitement and trepidation, I signed up for an afternoon at Vertical Adventures.

Fast forward to the big day. As I stood at the foot of the towering walls, nerves kicked in.

What had I gotten myself into? But then I remembered: life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.

With shaky knees and a determined spirit, I embarked on my vertical journey. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t pretty!

My attempts at scaling those walls resembled more of a comedic sketch than a feat of athleticism. But I was trying something new, and that’s what counted, right?

Despite my less-than-graceful descent, I found myself exhilarated. The rush of adrenaline, the challenge of conquering each obstacle—it was addicting.

And as I peeled myself out of that safety harness, I knew I had found my antidote to boredom.

So, if you’re stuck in a weekend rut like I was, consider this your invitation to break free. It’s time to trade flat plans for lofty pursuits and elevate your weekends to new heights!

1. Bouldering

Bouldering is a type of rock climbing done on small rocks or man-made walls without ropes or harnesses. It’s all about scaling short, challenging routes using only your hands and feet for support.

Whether on natural boulders or indoor climbing walls, the goal remains the same: to conquer the climb using technique, strength, and problem-solving skills.

2. Top Rope Climbing

Top rope climbing is when a climber is safely connected to a rope. This rope goes up, through an anchor system at the climb’s top, and then down to a belayer at the bottom.

3. Auto-Belays

Auto-belays are gadgets that help you descend smoothly when climbing, so you don’t need someone else to hold the rope for you. With auto-belays, climbers can tackle routes independently without relying on another person to manage the rope.

Tips When You Climb at Vertical Adventures

1. Gear up.

You don’t need any special gear to get started at Vertical Adventures. They recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you can move around in easily, like sweatpants or shorts.

You can also climb in your running shoes, but eventually, you might want to rent or buy climbing shoes for better grip.

2. Get an orientation.

Before you start climbing, be sure to get an orientation from the staff at Vertical Adventures. They will teach you the basics of belaying, which is how you keep your climbing partner safe, and how to use the auto-belay system.

3. Warm up.

Before you start climbing, take a few minutes to warm up your muscles. This will help to prevent injuries.

Do some light cardio, such as jumping jacks or jogging, and some dynamic stretches, like arm circles and leg swings.

4. Start easy.

Don’t try to tackle the hardest routes right away. Start with some easier routes to get yourself warmed up and assess your skills.

As you get more comfortable, you can gradually move on to more challenging routes.

5. Focus on technique.

Climbing is more about technique than strength. Pay attention to your footwork and hand placement.

Use your legs to push yourself up the wall, rather than pulling yourself up with your arms.

6. Take breaks.

Don’t be afraid to take breaks when you need them. Climbing can be a very physical activity, so it’s important to listen to your body and take breaks when you start to feel tired.

7. Have fun!

Most importantly, relax and have fun! Rock climbing is a great way to get exercise, challenge yourself, and meet new people.
