The Academy of Learning College offers quite an array of computer courses that help students pursue different career opportunities in private and public sectors.

Courses include web design, computerised accounting, support specialisation, and computer service technician training.

Most of the classes are held at the academy’s classrooms, although distance learning is also available for those who want to attend their classes at times convenient for them.

It’s worth noting, though, that this isn’t the best choice for beginners as most courses cater to advanced learners, particularly workplace professionals seeking to upskill.

That said, we’re pleased that the tuition fees for these classes already include the syllabi, student manuals, and learning materials.

Students may also check the school’s website for the potential salaries they’ll earn with their prospective computer jobs.

Another highlight of this academy is that it offers financial aid to students who need sponsorship for their computer courses.

Students may also get sponsorship from their employers and other financial institutions in case their payment plans can’t cover their computer course tuition fees.

And for tuition fees, we’re pleased to know that the school currently accepts payments via cheques, Visa credit cards, and cash.

A limitation though to this school is that applicants should have Grade 12 or Master Student credits before they get qualified for the computer courses.

Alternatively, they may enroll in continuing education programmes for adults first to get the necessary credits before enrolling at this school’s computer courses.

Pros

  • Computer courses are suitable for different career opportunities
  • Tuiton fee covers studying materials and syllabus
  • Offers financial aid
  • Students may attend classes at their convenient time

Cons

  • Limited variety of course options
  • Grade 12 or Mature Student credits are required for applicants

I am an alumni, and I still recommend AOLCC Winnipeg South

“Academy of Learning career college is one of the best school not only in Winnipeg, but throughout Canada. I am an alumni of the college at Winnipeg South Campus. First and foremost we have excellent instructors, administrative staff, admission officer to the least staff they are all wonderful personality. Above all we have very conducive and professional atmosphere and well equip class room for lecture. We have excellent courses and good curriculum. For example we have quite a number of courses like ” Community Service Worker” that was my course of study, “Health Care aide” “Administrative Assistant” “Medical Assistant” “Educational Assistant” etc. What made Academy of Learning exceptional is that they don’t only teach you the theoretical aspect of the course, but also practical. At the end of the theoretical experience in the classroom i was designated to (Dasch Inc) Direct Action for Support of Community Homes in Winnipeg for practicum with experience and dedicated staff, so i continued working with (Dasch Inc) after my six weeks practicum end. I am sincerely grateful to have taken the step to enroll at the Academy of Learning-Winnipeg South and to have obtained my Diploma in Community Service Worker in a conducive and professional environment. With this achievement i have come to term that the time spent for the program is worthwhile and i will encourage anyone that want to step up in their career to consider Academy of Learning – Winnipeg South as their first option.” – LeaguePlayz

People face digital threats such as hacking, scamming, and identity theft almost every day.

Thankfully, the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT) offers computer courses specialising in Internet and digital safety.

These include basic and advanced cybersecurity, network security, developing secure network infrastructures, cyber defence, and cloud administration.

But what sets this school apart is that it offers ethical hacking courses for those who want to further their computer skills in establishing safer network environments at home and at work.

Another highlight of MITT is that it provides certifications and diplomas to students once they’ve completed their chosen computer studies.

Besides diplomas and certifications, computer class takers are also given practicum schedules as part of their 10-month learning duration.

We think that the work practicum allows students to practise what they’ve learned in their classes and prepare themselves for their future careers.

It is also worth noting that MITT’s computer classes are open to local residents and international students living in Winnipeg.

Also, it’s important to know that this school requires applicants to have Grade 12 credits for English and Math as qualifications for its computer classes.

Some courses will also require students’ Technology Programs Aptitude Test (TPAT) scores before they get qualified for the programmes.

Another limitation of this school is that all courses are currently only being conducted online.

On a brighter note, MITT highlighted that it will provide alternatives to fill in the gaps of missed practicum schedules.

Pros

  • Offers ethical hacking and cybersecurity courses
  • Classes are open to international applicants
  • Practicum included

Cons

  • Has stricter admission requirements
  • Classes are currently limited to online delivery

Herzing College has a selection of computer courses that last ten to twelve months. Students who will graduate from these courses will be awarded with diplomas or certificates that will help them apply to leading IT companies in Winnipeg.

What we like about this college is that it offers hybrid learning arrangements for its computer classes. We find this convenient for those who enjoy learning from the comfort of home, yet would appreciate a change of scenery once in a while.

While the Winnipeg branch of Herzing has a smaller selection of computer courses, we’re pleased to find that the curricula are quite comprehensive, packed with relevant topics that will aid students’ future careers.

As of writing, this college currently only has cyber security, graphic design, software design, and computer networking technology studies.

They also have internship weeks of at least a hundred hours, which we think is ample time for students to master their courses.

In terms of enrollment, we like how Herzing offers multiple start dates for registration. This allows those interested to apply to choose when they’ll submit their admission requirements.

The multiple start dates are also convenient for those who still need time to complete the documents they need to submit before enrolling.

A limitation though, is that the school currently doesn’t offer introduction courses that are free of charge. The college also doesn’t offer any computer classes to kids and teens – and those who haven’t graduated from high school.

We were also just a bit concerned to hear that some students apparently found their instructors difficult to approach when struggling through a module.

We’re also disappointed to hear that some students experienced discrimination from their teachers, which they said hampered their learning.

Pros

  • Offers hybrid learning arrangements
  • Courses have internship weeks
  • Multiple start dates for lessons

Cons

  • Currently doesn’t offer computer classes for non-high school students
  • Feedback on some professors/instructors being unapproachable

CDI College offers computer classes for online and on-site setups.

We appreciate the school for providing students the convenience of choosing whether distance learning or attending class on-site will be more convenient for them.

In terms of courses, we found that the college offers programmes in web development, network administration, web and mobile applications, graphic design, and network and Internet security.

A limitation of this college though, is that its computer course selection is quite limited – and not many basic computer classes available.

However, we checked each programme and found that each comprises many study topics that will help students master their chosen course gradually.

The courses also come with internship weeks, industry certification exams, and CompTIA and Cisco certifications.

In terms of admissions, some courses require students to be at least aged 19 before taking CDI’s entrance exams and starting classes.

Applicants may also need to have Mature Student credits to be qualified for any of the college’s computer programmes.

For the graphic design track, we’re pleased to find that the college doesn’t require applicants to submit their portfolios.

From what we’re told, the college emphasised that this track will help students build their portfolios from scratch and fine-tune them for their future employment.

Another strong point to this school is that it provides financial assistance and scholarships to students.

We enquired and found that the sponsorships may come from Manitoba’s financial assistance programmes or the RBC Royal Credit Line for Students plan.

Pros

  • Online and on-site classes available
  • Portfolio is not an admission requirement for graphic design track
  • Provides student financial assistance

Cons

  • Limited computer class options
  • Some courses require applicants to have Mature Student credits

Customer Reviews

Accommodates students with minimal experience

“As a graphic design student, it is nice to hear that a portfolio is not needed as an admission requirement. It is emphasized that this course helps build a portfolio from scratch (or a possibly better one) which is a great thing for those with minimal experience level, allowing everyone taking the course to have the same opportunities. All in all, great staff and great instructors! All very welcoming, friendly, and very helpful. Would highly recommend to those thinking about attending!” – Maria Reyes

Had a wonderful student experience overall

“I had a wonderful experience with CDI!! Very helpful, professional, and knowledgable instructors that helped me greatly. Practicum Coordinator very helpful. Would recommend this school to others!” – Jeanette Friesen

The Red River College (RRC) Polytech is known for language training and computer courses for beginner and intermediate learners.

We enquired about the school’s current computer lessons available and are pleased with the array of courses it offers.

As of writing, people may enroll in computer courses on Microsoft Office specialisation, simple accounting, digital UX for business, HTML5, and Photoshop mastery.

Introduction courses on Zoom, Canva, Google Docs, and courses on proper typing, sending and receiving emails, making video calls, and booking trips are also available for those who want to upskill themselves for work.

What we love about the Introduction courses is that students who’ll complete the first level will be given a free desktop computer.

We also appreciate RRC for providing certificates for all their computer courses, which students can use for job applications.

Do note, however, that while the computer courses are available online, slots are quite limited. We recommend registering at RRC’s online computer programmes early on if you prefer remote learning over on-site classes.

Another strong point to RRC is that some of its computer courses are free of charge. Even if these classes only last a day, we think they help students become more familiar with using everyday devices for work and communication.

It’s just quite disappointing to hear that some of the school’s instructors come in late and aren’t prepared with their lessons, which students didn’t like as they said they feel they’re not getting their money’s worth.

Another downside is that some of the online computer classes are quite expensive. For example, some of the courses cost $620 and last only two to three days.

This price is quite steep, given that other schools offer the same classes for just around $300 to $400, with a longer duration.

Pros

  • Offers a good selection of computer courses
  • Some classes are offered for free
  • Winnipeg residents get a free desktop computer

Cons

  • Feedback on some instructors being late and irresponsible
  • Some courses are quite pricey
